Why do arrangement tracks go silent when launching clips?

Working in the Arrangement View, I imported some MIDI tracks into Live from a song I'd originally programmed on another sequencer, and I assigned VST instruments to them.
Next I switched to Session View, created an audio track and experimented with various drum loop samples. I placed some of those loops in the clips on that audio track.
Then I stopped playback in order to start the song again. But I started this time by launching one of the clips.
Suddenly all of the MIDI tracks go silent and I can't figure out what's caused them to shut up. They are still there. The track appears to be progressing, but I can't hear the MIDI tracks now.
I'm sure it's probably something very obvious but I've got a mental block on this one. How do I get the non-clip MIDI tracks to play back again?
This has happened a few times now and I spend 10 minutes trying to figure it out before switching over to my hardware synth workstation and giving up on Live.
Any tips would be most appreciated.
