well, it's kind of logical.
youtube is an 'on demad' service. So most of the time, people are requesting the content they receive. So they are much more likely to give a higher rating....


but anyways I agree. I've seen some absolutely BULLSHIT videos that deserve NO stars getting high ratings. Especially when it comes to music production and showing off instruments etc.
These fucking festering idiots use the god damn mic built-in to the camera to record the sound.

My roommate who is a grown ass man takes great pleasure in going on youtube and rating movies the exact opposite of what everybody else rates them just for the fuck of it. I'm sure he's not alone in this brief "sticking it to the public" moment.

On top of the lame rating system, you can go to any video that's gone viral, and in the "related videos" box off to the right, you'll see whatever videos are posted by whoever is paying youtube for advertising that week, even if there isn't a single common tag between them. Plus, the overall quality for just about everything on youtube is shit, it's like someone setup a virtual dumpster for rejected footage from "America's Funniest Home Videos". With rare exceptions, I pretty much only check out vimeo links anymore - there's just not as much crap there.

But yeah, the "American Idol" phenomenon happening in the ratings is pretty much bullshit.

It works the other way too, I put up a video mix with music and got a very positive message from a someone who does VJ'ing. The video was barely viewed but rated a 3, wonder who did that? So getting a complimentary Youtube PM from someone means they have basically tried to ensure your rating is dookie.

ratings are bad, but not as worse as comments. i swear on every single popular video, there's always at least 5 racists, misogynists, or anything else ending in -ist. not to mention all the blind praise for what is obviously a shit video (like the numerous crappy cell phone videos showing off gear -"hey man great job 5 stars!!!!!!!!")
