Can't record with my electronic drum kit...

Post by C_Mai » Mon Mar 08, 2010 2:53 pm

Hi there, i've been using ableton live 8.0.1 for about a month now. I use Roland UA-25 as my external sound card, my laptop is pretty old but it's 1.7 hrz, 1.0 gb RAM, and the other parameters i doubt would matter here. I have made all of my drum kit using diy tools, but had to buy a silly Typhoon TYDD-01 head to make it all work. The problem that i have is that, unlike the previous program i used for recording named Samplitude 10 which read the drums just fine as a midi instrument and i was able to assign the needed sound to each of my drum pads, ableton gives me trouble.
I don't have much experience in recording live drums so i'm sure this is just my silliness. I put the midi cable in and followed the tutorial on how to connect a midi instrument. It seems like the program receives the messages from the drums as i can see a yellow light flashing at the top right corner whenever i hit them. I tried using impulse but wasn't able to figure out how to assign the pads to the sounds i want. All i was able to do at the end of my 4 hour torture, was to assign the pads as midi triggers that would turn certain clips on when it would hit them.
Please help,
your fellow musician is drowning here...

hey i suggest you use drumrack instead (hoping you're at least on live 7). the drumrack allows you to choose on which of its pads (ie, notes) put the single samples, whereas the impulse device only maps the 8 samples to c3--c4. When you choose your midi in in the drumrack track, you should see in the rack itself the yellow lights flashing when you hit a pad. Probably they are set in a general midi fashion, obviously one can change these but there is no need. Then just put the samples of your kit in the enlightening pads!hope it helps, cheers

This might be fairly simple, but I often miss it when I'm working... maybe it'll help you.

Make sure your MIDI instrument is set to "track" in MIDI preferences, make sure the track you have your software instruments in is either set to monitor in, or is set to auto with Record Arm enabled, make sure it's a MIDI track, make sure your MIDI device is selected in the track input.

Best of luck!
