The FINGER. Is it worth it if you DON'T have REAKTOR?

NI's The Finger looks pretty cool, but is it worth it without owning REAKTOR? Seems really limited if just used with Kore 2/Kore 2 player as a plugin within Live.

Thoughts?

I bought it and and was disapointed. You can do your own bit crushing and what not using racks and building a much more personal and rich solution. You will quickly tire of his effects.

I think you'll be disappointed.. running it as a Reaktor instance gives you way more control and options..

If you know what Live's effects do, How to use racks and how to map midi in Live, you do the same and even more as with The Finger without Reaktor!

there's no way you can do with Live what you can do with The Finger..
no offence, but if you don't fully understand how things work then don't give such advise..

for one you can change the order of FX, in serial, dynamically.. try that with Live..

Yea the Finger is a bit disappointing without Reaktor. I haven't found any of the presets to work for me, although the individual effects are quite awesome. I always find myself wanting to create my own presets. The problem I have with the presets is that there are dozens of effects laid out across the whole keyboard but within any given octave there are only 3-4 that are useful to me, and another 2-3 that sound crazy out of place. Also the effects layouts don't seem to follow a regular pattern from preset to preset. So you have to either really learn a few presets inside and out, or just risk hitting the wrong key and getting some monster noise you didn't intend.

It would have been helpful for NI to at least have supplied a map for each preset.

So I almost never use the Finger...it sits there and tempts me with possibilities, but when I try and use it it usually ends in frustration.

I have Reaktor so what I do is find the effects I like from the presets and order them that is useful for me, tweak and save my own presets. As mentioned, I find quite a few of the presets that are not useful but I really don't depend on using the Finger that much. Just another tool of many at my disposal. Overall it helps that I don't have to create the effects from scratch and helps me to discover new uses for Reaktor and new ways to effect my production.

I havent use the Finger in Kore because I have Reaktor. If you cannot make your own presets or "snaps" using Kore I would say the Finger might not be worth it. However, the Finger is a unique FX unit that is very velocity sensitive, plus the ease of attack and other fine tuning knobs, that responds in series of how you press the keys. It's like an FX instument, which is very unlike FX using Ableton. Granted you could do a lot of tricks with Ableton, dummy clips and tricky routing, and maybe even get some velocity sensitivity, but you will not duplicate the Finger.

I think what you pay for with the Finger is the ease of use and a simple one device mashing instrument, as oppose to loading up Ableton with a ton of FX and crazy routing that make your sets messy or overdone. Of course the Finger does not have any "NEW" fx. I mean there is really not much to advance on in the realm of FX, in any platform, Combs, Bit Crushing, Stutters, Reverbs, Delays, Flangers, Filters, Phasers, etc etc..Nothing new really. What makes the Finger special, is how you can play them dynamically. It how it uses them. And same for Ableton FX and rack, it how the are used.

If someone on this forum can make 1 Ableton FX rack that can even come close to responding the way the Finger does to keys and velocity, Prove it? I'm not talking about using dummy clips either.

Interesting. Thanks Gents. I was gonna go for Effectrix but wanted to check on this first. Looks like I'd really need Reaktor, which I'm just not inclined to purchase at this time.
