Formatting main HD and starting again...

Post by tommytinker » Fri Mar 19, 2010 7:52 pm

Hi

for various reasons i am starting my imac from scratch again, as i have too much rubbish installed and bits and bobs all over the place. I am sending it in for repairs and when it returns i want to start over....

As far as ableton goes, what steps do i need to take to ensure i can open all my projects again on 'the other side'? Such as plug in saved patches being kept? I can export the patch and back that up when i move all my music to another back up external drive then load it back in? Correct?

What about the projects themselves?

Thanks, any help is appreciated!

The Projekts.. all should be safed with collect all and safe..

The Live libary...

The Plug In folders in User and the main Libary folder

Everything that is related to any of your involved software in the Applikation support folders..

But the last you only keep for reference when something is really missing.usually that all gets installed
again...

that should avoid the main losses...

For plug ins i am reinstalling everything, as i have loads of demo plug ins etc i dont want. Clean install of what i know i use will do it.

So that take the plug ins bit off your list?

Really, as long as i do collect all and save, and save plug in presets in the relevant ableton project folders - i should be able to open them once iv reinstalled live, and the 3rd party plug ins?

No..because some of the plugs safe theire internal patches in the plug in folder..thats actual the files you might need not the plug ins itself.. but maybe one little sht plug plays an important role in one track..so just to safe the plug in folder might be safer...

So the plug in folders within ableton folder? or the ones in library/audio/plug ins? Cos i thought that contained the actual plug ins - not patches etc

Do a full hard drive backup before you wipe it. Then restore what you need as you realise you need it.

Nothing is lost and you'll only end up with what you need on your drive.

I have a 1.5Tb external just for backups and it's saved my life several times (I was particularly surprised by the bridge incident, but that's another story).

Yeh good plan, iv backed up with superduper, so EVERYTHING is backed up and bootable just incase. Then iv backed up all my other media too so ill be okay.

The bridge? Are you famous with some kind of advance beta copy or something!?!? :)
