old vocoders

....In my opinion, this is one of the coolest & most intelligible vocoder sounds I've come across. It seems a lot of old vocoders had a really good high pass blend that would make sibilance stand out and words nice & intelligible. I have spent many hours with a variety of software vocoders and they never have the same character. So now I'm starting to think about buying an old hardware unit.

If anyone has any good examples of software based vocoding that sounds similar please post them. Any program/patch suggestions would be awesome too.

Have you tried Image-Line's Vocodex? It is quite versatile. It offers a ridiculous amount of control over the signal. Combined with the proper carrier, it'll be able to do what you want.

My net connection for youtube is awful but...

It sounds like he was using his vocals + the vocoder.
so the sibilance comes from his voice ?

The wet/dry mix between the modulator and carrier was definitely heavy on the dry.

Good sib response is gotten from a carrier high in transients. The carrier is the most important part of a good vocoded sound. A bit of noise added to the carrier helps as well.

I have the Electro Harmonix Voicebox, and it is awesome. In that video, it sounds like a blend of vocoded and dry vocals. The Voicebox has been giving me THE MOST intelligible vocoding sound I've heard since daft punk. not to plug, but all the songs on my myspace use the voicebox (Funk me bad, Last Night, Weekend Flashback).

How about Kraftwerk's custom built EMS vocoder - recently purchased off ebay by Daniel Miller (boss of Mute records, producer of Depeche Mode, 'the normal', etc) for 12,500 pounds sterling. He refers to it as being 'as valuable to an electronic music enthusiast as Jimi Hendrix's guitar would be to a rock fan'
