problem with clip copy.. 8.13 problem feature or bug?

Post by 3phase » Wed Mar 31, 2010 12:54 am

Hi..

i often critizised a behaviour of live in arrange copy ..where the alt key need to be held up the point where the copy is actually executed..what can take with bigger chunks a little...what leeds with live allways to non performed copy actions.. in general you have to do much more moves in live for certain tasks as in other daw´s.. so its pretty horrible to add arteficial double actions.. when i move a block with alt drag and release the mouse i ve confirmed my will to do the copy... its not necessary to make me wait up to the moment the copy is finshed..

I think this is a conceptional bug from day 1..

bUT,,now we have this in session mode aswell..especially now with version 8.13..

It might apear as a problem because 8.13 seems to be a bit sluggish regarding such screen operations..

Or ableton has "optimized" it to behave exactly like in arrange.. wich is shit IMO..

But why? maybe they think thats a feature for some reason?

Are some users see it as a feature that you have to hold the alt key up to the moment the operation is completed?

For me this is stealing time.. i am not the guy that likes to wait for his computer...

BUt maybe ther are reason i just don see wright now? so please comment..

Or i do a poll again.. ;-)
and when some users see that as a bug i report is as one..

edit.. i removed the poll because it apperas to be a bug related with outside influences on live...

what that might be? no idea yet.. but worked fine after a total system reboot..
have to watch it

This is not really related to the alt bug, but I thought I should make a call for Ableton to put someone on copy&paste / duplicate in general in their quality offensive for the following reason as well:

If you use grouped tracks in your arrangement view, copy & paste / duplicate will fail. In the "best" case, just the clips of the grouped tracks are skipped and must be copied in an extra step, but depending on the whole situation I also experienced live putting clips below grouped tracks at random positions. Not only on the wrong channel, but also at the wrong time.

If I find some spare time I'll upload a video and write a bug report, but I think it should be easy so recreate the buggy behavior just by adding some grouped tracks and trying some copy&paste / duplicate actions.

because i want to drag the file on various locations and i am used to dragging from years on excel spreadsheets..its a natural thg for me to do. to drag and drop.. its difficult to relearn that after so many years.

i had another look in the problem.. the problem is usually only in arrange because the big sections need longer to copy..

it appears as a problem in session view aswell when the computer is too slow for the load.. in my case the dsp meter shows 50% what is for what i do maybe more than it would usualy take...

would be nice if there would be a performance test with L.813..

but independend from that i wonder why the copy can only continue to be executed while the alt key is held..

Is that OS related and a must or just not tailored for 50% dsp load situations?

whats the problem?
either hold Alt down while dragging or hold Alt down after dragging,
either way, just make sure its down while you drop..

wait.. got it..
I guess that's due to sluggish Arranger behaviour with heavy sets..

maybe is it due to the Recording Events in the beta/RC ?

i have to hold it up to the moment the copy is executed.. what usually ends in the situation on slow copys.. that i have to do any copy process twice..

is it not behaving like that on your computer? are you PC or Mac..

On Mac its an old problem from the beginning..but was only a problem in arrange..never in session mode...up to L8... there it started..disappeard..and is there more pronounced now than ever..

just dont feels very snappy when you are forced to wait for the program on such basic tasks like copying a single 1 bar clip.. it´little s a workflow interuption.. that over the years sums up to hours..

I actually think that this is an old bug because drag copy dont behaves like this o other programs on a mac..so its probably nothing the OS is forcing the program to do..

I lived with that for many years i just stoped to arrange ;-)..

but now its in the session view aswell... so its getting worse instead better..

as the poll shows some like it like that..

Even when its hard when such functions are acting different that the home OS...

Thats probaly the reason that you allways run into it and never get used to it because its the single applikation on a mac that wants you to do that.

Actually i would like to know why this is a feature for some..

I really cant imagine the benefit.. please enlighten me

?? maybe? but the routine of the process than still would be following the IMO wrong logic.. so it would be good to get rid of that..

I think when you drag a file with an alt key comand.. and drop it at a location you have expressed your will to drop it there.. the little possebility to abandon the copy in the process would only matter on a system without undo..

especially when i compare the many many times of accidently aborted copy tasks to the 1 time in a month i accidently drop on another file..

yes..when i release the alt before the copy is executed its abandoned..

this only is a problem when the copy needs longer than your attention span..

so if you have a faster machine you maybe are not experiancing it because the copy is executed in no time?

maybe when you check with a very long clip?

still no problems.. the action is executed in a split second..
even with multiple clips or even a whole arrangement..
