Akai MPD24 update firmware fix.

Post by Golden State » Thu Apr 08, 2010 4:13 am

Ok. So I've read TONS of way to "unbrick" your MPD24 after trying to upgrade the firmware to 1.10. I just bought my MPD24 today from a dude about to go in the Air Force. I brought it home, and noticed it had 1.09 running. So (like a dummy...in hindsite) I decided to upgrade it to the newest 1.10 firmware. Well, as soon as I did that (I followed the instructions to the T) I noticed it would get stuck while it updated, then it would give me a an Error 001 message. I tried using this other software thingy someone mentioned, tried a bunch of stuff... and FINALLY I came across a post suggesting to use a LONGER usb cord. Apparently some guy after he had tried everything under the sun (installing it via PC Windows XP... i guess he had been trying on a Mac like me) and finally decided....hey... let me use my printers really long USB cord... (i think i was like 6ft long)... and boom, it worked for him, the update finished. So I tried using an extremely long USB cord...and IT WORKED! I have no idea why a longer USB cord would matter? Maybe the short length one sends info too fast to the MPD during firmware updates? WHo knows...but using a very long USB cord worked for me. If you're at your wits end.... try it as a last resort. You might end up happy just like me!

After countless hours trying to save my 24 from being thrown across the garage floor i stumbled upon this post. My mpd24 is now working with no problems v1.10. I used a usb to power mine with a m-audio midi sport.

F’n A!!!
I have actually UNBRICKED MY MPD24 !!!!
Yesterday I attempted the wonderful v1.09 firmware upgrade. using the new Vzyex software that Akai is favoring over the proven Uniquest Software. At the end of the first 5 attempts to complete the firmware .sys file dump the “enter” button on the mpd24 would not engage and complete the install.
However, after reading Marcin’s Post I gladly uninstalled Vzyex and installed the Uniquest software from the Akai CD that came with my MPD24.
I did have to play around with the parameters a bit.
but here’s everything spec’ed out
Windows Vista 32
Uniquest MPD24 Software v1.00
M-audio Midi Sport Uno (as direct midi to pc) –
Radio Shack 6vdc 500ma AC adaptor
patience.
Step-BY-Step:
Close all programs.
restart your computer.
allow all start-up and diagnostics to complete and have a smooth start-up.
open Uniquest
**settings that worked for me**
Midi / In Ports Set to Midi Usb Device port and “#of Buffer” to 5
Options/ Preferences/ MIDI
Delay Between SysX transmissions : 0
Delay SysX ( delay every n bytes): 2
Slow SysX (ms per SysX delay): 20
apply
close and restart uniquest. (for settings to apply)
plug in mpd24 with

So this is what I need to do to enable the transport on mpd24 in Live, right?

These success stories aren't making me feel particularly brave.

yeah, all it took for me was an extremely long usb cable. i'm guessing it slowed down (my nano, milli, micro seconds) the transfer rate of information...slow enough for the mpd to understand. thats my guess. i dunno. but it worked!

If you do not have a long usb cable though...these directions show you how to slow the transfer down to do it.. Trust me it worked. Spent 4 hours trying to save my mpd24 from have no firmware.
