Noob question regarding RC testing

I am using 8.1.1 at the moment and am interested in testing the newer release candidates.
I understand that any work in 8.1.3 will not open in 8.1.1 so a backup of my projects would be sensible, but if i install a beta, will it overwrite 8.1.1 or will it install alongside it?

It will install alongside other versions. Be sure to not overwrite any 8.1.1 projects in 8.1.3, make new copies. In a worse case scenario you can go back to your untouched 8.1.1 projects.
