Hi out there,
I’m new to Ableton so the question I have may be obvious and I’m just not seeing it, my apologies in advance. I started a new and my first song using Ableton and I have been saving on my flash drive. As expected the more I add to the song so does the file size. I need to transfer this song onto one of my HHDs and I’m having trouble determining the best location. I would like to use the default location the application uses but I’m having difficulty determining where that may be. Any suggestions?
Thanks

Hi Kenny, there is no real best place to save your ableton file. The best thing you can do i make a new map and label it something like Ableton Live Tracks, then open up your live set you want to save. Go to File, click save live set as, then browse to the map you created and save it there. To copy all the associated files such as samples click File, then manage live set.
A new menu appears on the right side of the screen, go to manage project click it and then you can see what files are associated with the Ableton Project, select "collect into project" on everything. Then at the bottom click Exit and save. There you go everything is self contained. And nothing is referenced to your flash drive.

Re: Song file/data locations
Personally I have folder placed in the root of my audio disk called "songs". Under this I have several folders, one for each music app I'm using. Remember that your set will be saved as a folder (a white one at that:)), so in my opinion its a good idea to just save all your sets in the same folder called "ableton live" or whatever. If you save another version (a backup for instance) you may do this within the "white folder", and hence avoiding creating another project folder.
Additionally, I prefer to save rewired apps files into the above mentioned song folder, as that keeps everything together and tidy. You probably dont use rewire however, although you may some time in future.
