New Drum and Bass Track : Rambession & some ambient ideas...

Post by N-e-b-u-l-o-u-s » Wed May 12, 2010 8:41 pm

Hi,

I've updated my track Rambession, a little DnB number composed within Suite 8.
I can't stress how much I love Ableton! and when I thought the world could not be a brighter place...
- What's this??? Oh-no! I happened to discover the delights of Max-4-Live! :-O Oh, my word.....
There is nothing you cannot do anymore - dude, it even handles video!!! :-O

I've built a couple of plug-ins so far, my favorite being the multi-channel spectrum analyser that lets you see individual channels in the same display. (I may post even get round to posting some tutorials, at some point...) :)

The only down-side is that it's a little distracting from the actual music writting!
Speaking of which, I hope you enjoy my efforts so far & glad we've both discovered the delights of Ableton!

Kindest regards,

liked it alot...always been a fan of dnb

the female vocal seems a bit thin...my ears crave something a bit more "hitty" i suppose. kinda vague but dont really know how to describe it.

it also seems to need some sort of buzzy dark bass to "fill" it out a bit.

excellent drums!!!

Thanks for the kind reply artic!
(The drums on their own are running into 16 channels - with enough automation to run a small factory!) :D

Regarding the vocal (which I yoinked from a CM-cover disc) is the thiness perhaps related to EQ?
(because I did thin it out quite a bit at the lower end) or. more a case of the vocal content?

I imagine switching the vocal to something different could shift the whole tone of the track,
I might have a play around & see what happens...

And - funny you mention 'buzzy' dark bass, I'm experimenting with some evil reese bass sounds this very minute!
At present I'm layering a bunch of detuned saws in Ableton's Analog - but I just bought Massive and really look forward to the possibilities of the sequenced-lfo!!!
(Seen a wonderful video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SK1ocGVDibg which has go me really buzzing
- Massive's evelope system is so powerfull!)

P.S. Im cutting a version that is 3 1/2 mins - following the traditional 'mixable' format,
what do you think - would it 'break' the track? or bring some needed 'haste'?
(It sounds okay so far, but having to cut out several minutes makes me cry!) ;)

Thanks again for your advice & thank for giving my music a listen...
Will def. post a new cut, when I get that bass sorted :D

Kindest regards,

N-e-b

You are very kind, thank you for the wonderful feedback! :D

And as promised, here is the code for the (max-4-live) 5 Channel Spectrum Analyser I put together:

It's quite a simple patch, that uses plugsend~ & plugrecieve~ to send multiple audio signals to one plug-in. The plug-in has 5 spectrum analysers visually superimposed on-top of each other, each coloured differently (per-channel).

As I said, it's not a complex patch, but I hope you find it useful!
(It came in real handy for EQ'ing all the drum parts!!!)

Hi Benjamin. I was going to comment on individual tracks but after listening they all share the same comments. IMO, I think the tracks are too long and redundant. Perhaps you could shorten the intros as well because they take to long to get to the good parts. I also enjoy d&b but the ones I've heard have more variety/breaks/buildups etc to captivate attention. You have a lot of good sounds going on especially with the pads but d&b in general suffers from a lack of vocal parts to stay interesting after a while. Even after having said all that, I did enjoy listening. Thanks for sharing. Respectfully.

That's fair comment indeed, you should hopfully be a fan of the shorter edit I mentioned above :) it drops straight into the 'rezzy goodness' from the off...

I've also attempted to mix (dj) the shortened DnB track over some commercial tunes & it's sounding fairly lagit (it fits), but I've heard what you say about the breaks & build-ups - they do stand proud in the mix (from the other tunes), and it shows me the type of elements are still required.

It's probably where I'll end up going after I get the reese automation tidied up. (I want to avoid the typical white-noise build-ups tho, gunna have to think on that one...)

Thanks for the honest reply dude - You can't get any better if it's all good! :D

I'll be back... N-e-b
