Stretching envelope within MIDI clip

Post by generalchaos316 » Wed May 19, 2010 5:51 pm

I have a sinking feeling that it is not possible to do this right now, but here goes nothing! 8O

I am using Ableton 8 to run an automated lighting rig using DMXIS during concerts. Each function of the lights (pan, tilt, dimmer, color, etc) resides on its own track with MIDI clip(s) sending CC envelopes to the lights.

I would love to be able to create a library of predefined lighting commands (represented by a short MIDI clip with the proper envelope already drawn) that can be dragged and dropped into the set (Arrangement view), and then expanded/compressed to the desired length.

However when I drag the clip to make it longer, it simply loops the envelope. If I disable looping on the clip and make it longer, then I get a longer MIDI clip (with nothing happening in the new space) but it doesn't actually stretch out the existing envelope.

During my research, I did manage to find clues indicating that I might be able to achieve this result by altering the BPM of the specific MIDI clips (which I will be testing as soon as I get home) but that seems like a strange way of going about it. Does anyone have any other advice?

as far as I know, there is no way other than manipulating the bpm (or moving each point manually, yikes).

this came up for me the other day when I stretched / compressed a piano part only to find that the sustain pedal events (CC64) were unmoved. :(
