Rewire slave mode
Rewire slave mode
Just noticed on the digi user conference that Reaper can now run VST/AU when in rewire slave mode.
So it is technically possible?
Can we please have this in Live 9 please?

Re: Rewire slave mode
this has me interested, there is nothing I want more than plugins under rewire, thats my #1 request.

Re: Rewire slave mode
yeah this is my dream since I first used live. live with vsts rewired to cubase. I hate overhead like the extra work you have to do with bad sync between two sequencers. In the last couple of weeks I feel the constant pressure to use cubase again (or a "big" daw) for complicated arrangements/editing for that, since even if I defend lives arrangement view (it's not that bad, really) I need a more mature linear editing and automation that ableton is lacking . and especially in large projects live looks to cluttered.

Thanks Mike and Ergo!
Anyone else using Live as rewire slave?

Re: Rewire slave mode
It's always been technically possible- FL, Orion and Bidule have let you host plugins in ReWire slave mode for years.audiofarm wrote:Just noticed on the digi user conference that Reaper can now run VST/AU when in rewire slave mode.

Thanks EW!
Let's cross our fingers that this will be implemented in L9

Re: Rewire slave mode
Seriously. This has been a huge point with me for a while. The lack of 3rd party plugs in LiveRewire renders it useless to me for any sort of cross-DAW use. Ugh.

in other words, a big +1 here...

Re: Rewire slave mode
Renoise allows it and has for ages too.
But I think people overplay how necessary it is - you can always just set up the vsts in the master host sequencer and given that Live chews CPU harder than Cubase or Reaper etc, it can be advantageous to do this given the computer resources required to run 2 DAW sequencers and rewire simultaneously. It doesn't affect Lives own instruments and devices. I rewire Live to Cubase sometimes and just host the VSTS in Cubase. If you plan ahead to only use Live's own devices in a project with rewire and do the rest in the master host, there is no extra 'overhead'.
It can be a bit more convenient for workflow though, especially if you use Live for composition (which I do) and especially if you have automation set up in Live. And given that other DAWS and programs can achieve it, it would be useful for Ableton to look at somehow implementing this feature at some point in the future.

Re: Rewire slave mode
as you said, it's a pita when you compose in live and have to rebuild all these parts in your rewire host - that's a massive overhead that a lot of people are not willing to do and often it's even not possible (how to emulate lives midi effects in another daw?) - I would bounce the audio instead, really.leedsquietman wrote:Renoise allows it and has for ages too.

And it's not only the overhead - I love the sound design possibilities in live with effect racks etc. I can't use it for vsts when I using live a in rewire. I can't use the midi from max for the vsts in my rewire host etc. etc.
I think the conclusion is that just not true. people don't overplay how necessary it is.

Re: Rewire slave mode
Well it's debatable how problematic it is, but like you I tend to just bounce audio (and/or MIDI) tracks from Live and finish things in Cubase because it's more convenient and less CPU unfriendly.
I think everyone agrees that it would be a positive step forward for Ableton to implement the vst/au feature in rewire as in other sequencers at some future date, the sooner the better.

Re: Rewire slave mode
Acid Pro has allowed it for ages as well.leedsquietman wrote:Renoise allows it and has for ages too.
I am wondering, is Ableton the only software that doesn't allow VSTs in slave mode? What other programs do not?
Re: Rewire slave mode
Same here....we NEED 3rd party plug-ins under rewire. This has been possible for years with other apps.
I write a lot on the road and there's no way i want to rebuilt my session once i get back to my studio and bouncing all tracks to audio is such a lame work around...who wants to bounce 40-50 midi/instruments/audio & fx tracks only to realize the clients want to make further changes. It would be a total waiste of time and workflow killer.
