advice needed for making beats

Post by jonev » Fri Jun 04, 2010 11:36 am

now ive learned how to make decent drums in impulse ive watched the vids numerous times but the prob is getting the individual hits at the right volume i know you have to adjust the velocity but i was just wondering are there any sort rules on what the velocitys of the clap and hats are and so on for each individual drum part.cheers

Ya it is really about individual taste. My advice would be to create your own style of drumming (or drum programming), just like your music in general should portray your style. However, think of a song in context, the dynamics will vary with builds, transitions, etc. so keep that in mind when you are dealing with velocity. Music is an art though so try not to approach it with too many rules, use theory and techniques as guidelines, but trust your ears.

For staring off though Live does assit with some of its midi effect plus, try the 'add random' Velocity preset over your hihats and go with like 10%, adds a nice humanised velocity variation.

Good place to start I guess.
