how can i move audio while retaining its original position

I do this in PT all the times....select an audio segment and move it to another audio track while keeping its original position ( sample accurate ). The grid is only practical if you're doing music ( bar, 1/8, 1/16....) but not when you want sample accuracy needed for post or even serious editing. Hope i miss something, otherwise, live seems ok as a sketchpad but really not made for editing.

For starters have you set the snap to grid resolution to "Off"?

That won't help with retaining its position on the timeline.

Live really really needs editing modifiers to constrain horizontal or vertical movement. Can't understand why that's not in there yet.

click-hold the clip and press 'cmd'. now move the part. the clip snaps to the relative position. you'll see a little green arrow showing the original position. it will also snap relative to the grid too, if you move the part around.

No, with snap-to-grid off when you click on the clip and/or start moving it and then hold 'alt' (or Mac equiv) you get the green marker for snapping to the original position.

When stg is on it nehaves as you say.

SheiLuser, we're both correct. just depending on whether the grid is on or off.
i was talking about when the grid is off, you are talking about it being on.

Thanks guys, all very good suggestions/work around.....another question.

1-when the grid is on is there a key modifier i can use to place my curser ( the vertical small yellow line ) in wherever i want without having it snap to a grid ??

2 what's the best way if i need to nudge my clip in arrangement view by a few samples or frame ???

3- Is there a timecode view in live or it's all bar/beats based ???

Thanks

1- nope! you have to turn off the grid first.
2- zoom in and click-drag. Live doesnt have a nudge feature. been requested many times.
3- right-click on the timeline (bottom of Arrange view) for the timecode views

Hey,

1. Yes, you can just hold Alt (on a Mac it should be the "apple") and click. The same goes for moving clips.
2. I'm afraid the microediting capabilities are a bit limited in that respect. Your best bet might be as primitive as zooming in extremely and manually moving. If you need/want to be exact to the sample, I'm afraid I cannot think of a way that could be done with the native Live tools only right now.
3. You can right-click on the time ruler and select the format desired.

Ha! Garyboozy beat me to it. With regards to 1., holding Alt works for me, are we talking about different things?

doesn't work here on mac - should be 'cmd-click', cos that works fine in clip view, but not in Arrange.
i'm sure it used to work, but def doesn't anymore. bug?

Almost seems like it - I'm on WinXP using Live 8.1.3, works fine in both views for me.

Thanks again.

1- yes indeed it does not work on the Mac

2- Zooming to sample or frame level ( not even sure if such grid exist ) just to move clips around is insane and definitely not an acceptable work around. In post, one need to spot/move regions/clips around all the time, imagine you need to zoom all the way in, nudge/move the clip and zoom back out...that's like a good 10 mouse click just for such a simple repetitive task....now imagine you have a 60 min show with hundreds of clips :(
