Striping MTC to tape

Post by tigali » Sun Jun 13, 2010 9:54 am

I don't suppose Live outputs Midi Time Code so what do people use to stripe MTC to a track on their tape machine?

Pro Tools, Logic, Cubase...

Just about anything but Ableton unfortunately.

Oh cool. I have Logic, I've just been using Live all the time. I'll have to get back to Logic. It looks like I may have to move back to Logic for a few reasons. I believe the midi functionality is also superior to Live. It kinda sucks as I'm so comfortable with Live but I just got some reel to reel action and I need MTC outputing. Thanks for the post.

Hey, why not rewire Live into Logic? Or use it as a sidecar?
I run between a few different pieces of software for different features as well.
Editing in PT, looping in Live, midi in Cubase, synth programing in Reason, etc.

You need a piece of hardware called a syncbox that stripes SMTE to your tape and converts it to MTC hasn't much to do with Live or Logic.
You need tape as well.
Read the manual.

Dude, wtf? I read the manual. I then did a search on the forum. There was insufficient information so I asked for some assistance. What's it to you? And what do you mean I need tape as well? I hope you're not saying I need tape for the tape machine. That would be special. Explain yourself or don't bother posting.

I've done this in the past with things that can't output SMPTE/LTC, by generating an audio file of the timecode and then simply playing it out of one of the audio tracks (from Live, or an HD24, or whatever). I have a Mac command line program that does this at http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/hd24/files/ -- see the link called "generateltc". If that doesn't work for you, then if you can get ahold of something that can output linear time code, just record an audio file of it at some convenient starting time, pop it into an audio track in Live, and play it into the time code input of whatever you're trying to sync up.

Sorry if I'm barking up the wrong tree here -- you've said "MTC" but I'm assuming you mean the audio form of that timecode, namely SMPTE/LTC.

That sounds absolutely spiffing. I'll check it out as soon as I get home. And yes, you're right, I was referring to the audio form of timecode.
