I'm not sure if the Props have given everything or just a partial list of what's to come, but new features include Combinator for easier management of multiple devices used together, MClass Mastering Suite, a better File Browser, an overhaul on the Reason Rack (everything is bigger!), better midi remote implimentation, record automation on multiple tracks, copy automation between lanes and tracks in the sequencer, new and improved Mute and Solo features in sequencer, faster loading of samples, sample playing devices now load five times faster, improved sample playback timing and quality.

i like reason, i really do, but i dont think it will be able to stay in the game or really compete until it incorporates the ability to record audio. and the sound quality really needs to be improved, hopefully they did that with this release. another thing i dont like about it is the malstrom, which i think is a brilliant concept, but i always hated the fact that i could not load my own samples into it, because personally the ones that it has sound horrendous imho. but other than that i think reason has much potential, it just needs to be fine tuned a little more. i sold my 2.5, seeing this new release, i really dont regret it. perhaps reason 4 will give me the incentive to get the program again.

That has to be the biggest crock of crap upgrade I have ever seen.

Propellerheads make great products, but their follow through sux.

Where is Rebirth now? ... more development could have turned it into the best emulator of it's kind.
Where is Recycle now? Phatmatik pro and Intakt leave it for dead
Where is Reason now? You can do only the same things before, but on a larger scale and polish the turd on it's way out with a mastering plugin.

Let's not forget the most obvious: where is the ability to record audio directly into the program? That would definitely make it a real upgrade and worth waiting for. Plus the sequencer needs some serious work.
Ok, Ok I know, you can use Reason in rewire mode and the host can do all the audio bits. Still!!!!!

What are the alternatives?

Right now I'm slaving Reason Adapted to Live... mostly because the software came with my M-Audio card and Redrum is a decent sounding drum machine. Right now I'm only using Redrum and one Subtractor for a bass.

I do live performances and drums and bass are what I'm missing most of the time. However, I'd like to add strings, brass, bagpipe, bells, chimes and pipe organ. I've put a few trumpet samples into the NN19 and it sounds decent, but this thread has me wondering if there is something better out there.

I just haven't had much exposure to VSTi and other rewire slave programs. If you aren't using Reason, what are you using? What is a good drum VSTi (acoustic-sounding?) What's good for bass-guitar-like sounds?
The question is not whether or not you are influenced, but rather what it is that influences you.

I think alot of people are missing the point.
The Combinator isnt just a grouping device.
It has input/output devices so you can have combinator preset effects.
Also you have audio merger splitting spiders so the routing options to multiple Combinators will be HUGE .
Think of the Combinator as a single device in itself when patched.
It does combi's ,velocity splits ,layers all internal patching.
So each Combinator Synth bank is a Patch in itself and ditto for effects devices.
Multiple combinators can be opened in one Reason song.
Each is controlled by it's own midi track with multiple midi data drawing of all devices to said track simulataneously.
Mclass - all devices can be used seperately so you know get proper compression ,side chain compression ,.soft/hard knee compression,high/low shelving eq , stereo seperaters ,signal boosters etc etc thrown in that can be patched anywhere.
This looks pretty simplistic but then again so does Live 4 and it does way more than first meets the eye.
Also in the .plan files on the site it states they're working on 5 more devices for next year.
You get a bigger soundlibrary of the cuff in 3.0 also.
Better sample accurate sample handling (better phase coherency = better signal response) etc etc etc ....
I am actually really pleased with this.
Get Reload a swag of Akai library disks and you've got a Rewired Triton pumping into Live 4.0 - pretty good if you ask me.
And have you guys checked some of the combi synth patch demo's 8O .
Very nice indeed. :D
My aren't the wings of butterflies beautiful and do they not make wonderful perturbations.....

I do all my mastering in Reason so those mastering tools will really come in handy.

Im not a Reason user, I was waitin for v3 to find out if I should ever become one, and for the moment Im far from being convinced.

I get the feeling that the Prop'heads were a bit forced to release something at a point where they lose market share and when everyone is getting very impatient to see some evolution in the software.
it's out for Christmas so the kids can include Reason on their gift list...
But the move is unconfident, well, it surely doesn't wow me the way Live v 4 did, for example...
Maybe the 2.5 release was a strategic mistake from them? They should have waited a bit to release all their innovations together with the 3.

Anyway, Im maybe missing some subtle revolutionary features in v3, but generally I would describe this announcement in one word: deception.

I hadn't read that. THAT is what alot of people need and want. The update is cool, but obviously people wanted and expected something different.

BTW, I don't believe that they will ever implement audio in or VSTs. damn, I just want an arpeggiator in that program!

i dont think that software mastering is that good .....

i only believe in iron !

no software can make a track sound that fat as a hardware tube comp can....
who agrees with me ??

....

Analog and digital are two different types of sound. Neither one is better or worse.. only different.

Each has its merits in particular situations, and each has its flaws in situations too.

Reason is an awesome program, and Live 4 really expands Reason to its full potential.

nothing makes you feel more broke then looking at a nice tube comp.
the line between hardware and software is getting really thin. (look at acces virus) i used to like reason, but it lacked oomph. If these features make it sound like hardware instead of a toybox, it will probably be worth it.
if it's as good sounding as the korg legacy collecton, i'm in for a real treat.

Live 4 give my Reason the oomph!! factor.... the factor compressors with Live are awesome, so are the EQ's... then I bought the Golden bundle and I use them too.
