Can't youtube at work, but even if you hate Apple or the iPhone you at least have to appreciate them pushing other phone manufacturers to try to outdo the iPhone. Before the iPhone smart phones were like having your office computer in your pocket. Gee, fun!

reminds me of 2 things:
A. the doctors at my office that just have to have one despite all the reasons that its a BAD idea on so many levels.
B. chicks that wear jeans/cloths that are painfully tight in the name of fashion.
both of which are about as needed as rims that spin or hats with the tags still on em.

if you think getting rid of most of the standards that have been in place for the last decade in order to have an iPhone is a good idea then you have more cash than sense. things like synchronizing calendars via Outlook and Exchange are in the only available dummy web version on the iPhone because it won't work with an Exchange server. lame. If the phone gets lost or stolen (which is likely) its not secure unless the user put a password on it and actually kept it on there. There is no centralized control so we just have to trust that everyone is going to be responsible all the time AND we can't wipe them to be sure. I can tell you by the number of Porsches in the parking lot that being responsible with money, at the very least, is not a strong suit. Then there's HIPAA compliance which basically says that if you leak any patient information (even on accident) you will start bleeding money from your ass and that if the number of patients affected is just one more than 499 it will be all over the local news because your organization will be responsible, by law, for making the call to tell em. its also illegal to transmit patient data back and forth with unsecured devices.
it takes a lot more than using your phone as a voice recorder to be good for health care. other hand helds have had that capability for years, before there even was an iPhone. besides if i go to the doctor and the fucker whips out his personal cell phone to start showing me the results of my tests... i'm leaving. right then. it won't be the last they hear of me though. Thats if i don't tell him what to do with his cool phone before i walk out on his ass and demand my co-pay back.
In the end what Apple hopes to do is cool factor their way in through the back door. Which is what they've done to the hearts and minds of so many people around the world, doctors included. hats off to them for that... its no easy task, but stricter policies within health care that are happening right now means that Apple is going to have to do better than a cool "app for that" and start thinking about playing nicely with networks, with Microsoft in general and start taking some of the i out of iPhone. bPhone, ePhone, would be a better perspective if they really want to close the gap. Switching out all the equipment and installing iTunes throughout the facility are not viable options in an organization that is trying to be fiscally responsible... even though iTunes is free.

My roommate works in the health industry so I hear about some of the things you mentioned and you make some valid points, but wow dude, quite a tangent about a company trying to make their gimmicky products more useful and robust in the real world. I don't really get anger or resentment over that. It's like a family of Mexicans living in a garage getting all pissed off when the landlord offers them the whole house as an option. One of my coworkers went to his friend's auto shop and his friend showed him how he had all the information from the diagnostics computer going to his iPad. How the fuck and why he got that going I have no idea, but I also don't think it's something to get all worked up about, but a certain amount of people are always going to say "Oh wow, look at Mr. Fancy Pants with his iProduct!" like the grandfather who walked 10 miles to and from school barefoot in the snow uphill both ways.
