Automap HUI and Live 8.1.3
Automap HUI and Live 8.1.3
Is there anyway to control Live's mixer in Automap 3? There is a setting called Automap HUI that allows you to emulate a Mackie controller in DAWs like Cubase.
I know that you can control Live through Mackie emulation with different hardware controllers. I did this with my BCR2000 and my padkontrol.
I would like to do the same thing with my zero sl mk2. In this way I could hit the mixer button in Automap, and use mackie emulation to control the mixer.
Right now, it looks like you have to be out of Automap (in advanced mode) to be able to control Lives mixer interface.
But is there anyway to control Live in Automap?

Nope. Ableton does not conform to to Host automap like the other DAWs do. You have to be in the special Ableton template, which isn't much more than Ableton's regular instant mapping.
Ableton are special. They don't change for no one.
Yeah, it sucks.

you could create a user configuration or python midi remote script that allowed you to read midi data coming out of automap as remote control instructions. I've done the former (edit the userconfiguration text file) so that I could use launchpad as a device controller. I'm slowly working up to the python scripting maxichallenge.
Re: Automap HUI and Live 8.1.3
I'm curious why it's possible to fool Live into thinking that there is a Mackie Control hooked up to it with other hardware, (like my BCR) but not with Automap.
Isn't this what is happening with Automap HUI? It's making Automap look like a Mackie Control to the DAW (Cubase)
I expected to be able to create a Mackie control in Lives prefs for control surface, and then set its input and output ports to Automap HUI. I couldn't get this to work, of course, but I'm not sure why. There's even midi activity on Live's midi monitor, but Live won't map it's mixer controls to it.
It's still not perfect. If it worked, you'd get a really great template for Live's mixer, but I don't know how you would deal with Live's plugins and racks in Automap.
It's kind of like you take the SL MK2 and divide it up into two crappy control maps for Live: the left side for Live plugs, and the right side for Live mixer. Automap is much more elegant with it's groups and group buttons. Not exactly total integration.

The MCU protocol is different to the HUI protocol. Live supports MCU but not HUI.

Re: Automap HUI and Live 8.1.3
Yeah Live's "total integration" with automap is just terrible. The "automap" template in ableton is the worst host functionality there is with the SL. The faders are used as volumes, pans, sends. It's brutal. Only 8 encoders for controlling plug-ins that way, which makes way too many pages. And then there are 16 buttons doing nothing and 8 knobs blank for midi mapping. yippee. Other DAWs have much better integration. It's not bad for quick access to 8 macros and track select, but it should use the whole unit for mixing purposes, and the whole unit for instrument devices alternatively.

Re: Automap HUI and Live 8.1.3
Yeah, that would really work nicely. I get the feeling that there is some technical snag, but I'd love to see Automap work for everything: hit the mixer button to get a mapping of all Live DAW stuff mapped out. Hit the instrument or effect button and gain access to all the plugs regardless of whether it's Ableton or third party.glitchrock-buddha wrote: but it should use the whole unit for mixing purposes, and the whole unit for instrument devices alternatively.
But right now it's automap for third party, and Live template in advanced mode for everything else.
I suppose you could create two Live templates in advanced mode: One for plugs and one for the DAW with more sensible mappings (like the encoders for panning), but switching between them would require an extra button push. I might look into that.

Re: Automap HUI and Live 8.1.3
I just get into Live and Automap and just wanted to second your opinions. You should be able to build up your own automap-mixer template for Live like in Logic!!!!! Ableton do it!!!
Re: Automap HUI and Live 8.1.3
maybe you should read up in the "DAW setup guide". There is everything you need to get started.
Also you have to update your device to at least Firmware 3.41.
I have it working like a real mixer with banks of 8 tracks (switchable).

Did you make your own custom remotescript and use the automap HUI?fisto wrote:maybe you should read up in the "DAW setup guide". There is everything you need to get started.

I'm curious about the remotescripting pssobility with a Novation SL. Specifically whether you could make some pages use the whole unit for device control...
