[MIDI tech help] Doepfer Pocket Dial // Live // Midi Merging

Post by joel macclellan » Mon Oct 07, 2002 7:04 am

Hi all.

I have a few technical problems/questions/concerns about PocketDial and Live.

~ I can't get relative MIDI to work. I am using Live 1.52 on 2 machines: WinXP DAW with Creamware Pulsar MIDI and WinXP laptop with midisport 2x2. I have the same problem on both machines - absolute MIDI works fine, but not relative MIDI. I have the dip switches set to what I think to be the proper configuration: 01110110 - (by this number I understand "off" is "0" and "on" is "1" and the binary listing above corresponds to the integers on the PocketDial, that is the first digit is 1, the second two, and so on up to 8).
I have an older PocketDial - one of the hideous looking camo-units. I go to the MIDI assign dialogue in Live, pick a paramater with a mouse click, and turn a knob slowly to the left/counter-clockwise. The small dialogue at the bottom says "absolute" - I attempt to switch it to any of the relative settings but after turning the knob, the display quickly reverts to relative. I believe that I have everything setup correctly, but it doesn't work relative. Either I have missed something, or ??!?

~ Live can only accept control info through one MIDI-input port. I just ordered the Evolution MK-225C MIDI keyboard - Am I correct to understand that using the MIDI-merge feature of the PocketDial will not work, because it jumbles the MIDI data thinking it is MIDI-feedback for itself. One of the Ableton-folks posted something to this effect, but it was pretty obscure and not well explained. Anyone have experience with this? I basically want to use the keyboard to trigger clips and such, and the PocketDial to do mixing and FX tweaking at the same time.

If it is true that this combination won't work, how about using a seperate Hardware Merger to sum the PocketDial and Evolution into a single MIDI in into Live? I have no intention of installing the Evolution's USB MIDI stuff, but only using the MIDI out port into my MIDISport 2x2

Thanks in advance to anyone/everyone that can help on this front. I hope that I can get it to work out.

peace,

hahaha - the "cool" emoticon above was unintentional - I input the number eight followed by a closing parentheses: "8" + ")" and I got this 8) - oh well. Hope you got my meaning anyways.

Check out FrankH's posts - he's the guy who's been able to use the Pocket Dial very successfully with Live.
