can anyone recommend any good FX to mess things up a lil and dirty them but not so much that you cant hear the source material melodically?

Filter Delay with low delay time is a nice thing.
Also, you can split your sound up in frequency bands (using Multiband Dynamics and the Solo buttons for example) and manipulate the single frequency bands. Give the low end some heavy compression and put a Redux on the high end to bitcrush the treble. Lots of ways to give your sound a little edge.

This is a great tip. We have a video on the site that shows how to do this with a rack.
