Loop in and out for DJing live
Loop in and out for DJing live
I'm very new to using Live for a live DJ set. I want to know how to loop an audio track in and out. I have been trying to figure out how to use beat repeat on a return track but it's not giving me the results I want. I've been changing the output mode to "insert" and "gate" mode since it is supposed to mute the track while it is repeating but I still hear the track beneath the repeated audio. How do I loop a part of a track while DJing live? Do I need to use a dummy clip for this?
I've watched many videos on youtube, but all pretty much cover the basics of DJing and but don't really talk about live effects and techniques. Most of the videos show pre-made Live sets that they DJ from. Are there any tips to DJing live and on the fly?

Check out my Super Luper rack in my DJ EFX pack, does exactly what you want:

Well, as long as you only want to loop 1 bar.

Could anyone explain what how he's using the effects in this video? I just bought the APC40, trying to set up my effect racks.

Thanks for the file but I cannot seem to get your files to work. I see all the .adg files but Ableton doesn't recognize them. I try to drag and drop them from the side panel or from my finder window and my cursor turns into the "no" symbol http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/No_symbol Am I doing something wrong? edit: I'm using Live 8.Tarekith wrote:Check out my Super Luper rack in my DJ EFX pack, does exactly what you want:

Edit2: When double clicking from inside ableton, it says the files are "the preset cannot be loaded, its probably broken"
Edit3: Updated Ableton, fixed the problem.

Re: Loop in and out for DJing live
Are you using Live 8.1.3 or newer? If so that means you're on a Windows computer, and running into an Ableton bug. Out of my hands, but other people have that issue and I've reported it to Ableton.

I was running 8.0.4 on a Mac. Updated to 8.1.4 fixed the problem.

I was actually really curious about this? Is there a limitation in place that limits it to one bar?
Does anyone have a simple one knob rack for looping 4 bars, that scrolls down to 3,2,1,1/2,1/4?
This would make my day!
Re: Loop in and out for DJing live
It uses the BeaT Repeat effect, which has a maximum loop time of 1 bar. Nothing I can do about it, sorry.

This is totally random and slightly off-topic but
You can make a pretty damn long feedback looper using AutoPan and Filter Delay in a rack.
Have an Autopan w/ Saw, 100% Shape, Rate at 2 in this case, set to 100%. Set a Filter Delay after it, Duplicate the Autopan to be After the Filter Delay also. (This sets it so that the Filter Delay picks up every Other bar, but if it has a 1-bar loop, it will also be forced to only playback at the rate of Every Other bar.
Filter Delay settings - Turn off Input for L, and also R. Turn the Filter for L+R off, set feedback to 100%, Volume 0db. Turn the Dry amount to -inf.
Next, group it all. Duplicate the channel, and set both AutoPans 'Offset' parameter on the new channel to 180. Now, for every bar that the first one skips, this one picks up every other bar.
Finally, you may or may not want one extra channel in the rack for 'Dry'.
This 2-Bar looper concept can be made more complex for a 4 or 8 bar feedback looper
