Launchpad over USB Hub

Post by gusc » Thu Jul 29, 2010 8:28 am

Hi there,

I Just bought a new USB Hub (Lindy 4 port hub from thomann.de) and as with previous one Launchpad get's really slow through hub. Has anyone else experienced the same problem. I'm on Windows 7 now with Suite 8.1.4 and latest Novation USB drivers. When I connect Launchpad directly to built-in USB port it works fine, but through USB hub it get's really slow - LEDs redraw really slow, button press signal is delayed.

Anyone else experienced this? Any solutions?

I have experienced this just as you described, running Windows Vista, Live 8.1.4, and a D-link DUB-H7 hub. The Launchpad, ordinarily pretty snappy when I have it plugged directly into the machine, slows to a crawl and takes far too long to redraw, as well as send button presses when I have it through the hub. Too slow to be useful.

I did some simple testing and determined that the Launchpad is fast though any direct USB port, but it slow through the hub, no matter which port the hub is plugged into. I also tried keeping the hub in the same port, but putting the Launchpad into each hub port in succession, and none of them was any faster than the other.

In fact, I did all this without having any other devices plugged into the hub. Even with the hub all to itself, the Launchpad is still slow. It's as if it's stuck in USB1.1 mode instead of USB2.

Does anyone know of any utilities I could use to inspect the mode the hub and devices are using? I can't imagine why just adding a hub would make the Launchpad so slow.

I use a USB 2.0 four port hub with a power supply. The launchpad is dog slow on it for some reason as well. Even just a tiny amount of latency seems to really affect the launchpad's performance.

There's another twist to this.

Last week I replaced my Vista box with a Macbook Pro from Apple. Same USB hub, same Launchpad, same version of Live (except now on Mac OS) and the Launchpad works FINE through this hub, just like it was plugged in directly. The only thing that's changed is my laptop.

I suspect that the USB ports on my old laptop were the problem, unless there's something about Ableton on Windows that would send messages more slowly to the controller?

Curious.

Had the same problem as gusc, on Win XP, same USB hub. Now I connected it to ht emainborad directly and it works fine!
My English is not perfect, I know... Sorry about that.

P.S. to wishlist forum users: Please search for former requests. Otherwise they will be splitted into many small ones and we are loosing impact!!!

I don't know what happened, but since the last post I did a lot of upgrades (upgraded to Suite 8.2, upgraded Novation Automap and USB drivers and went from Vista to Windows 7) and now everything works fine - I'm thinking that Vista was the problem or the USB drivers as the changelog stated something about Launchpad not performing well over some USB connections. Anyway, everything is working fine for me now.

I picked up a AKAI EIE that has a build in powered HUB.

When i connect the launchpad to the AKAI. It totally works on mac but on windows 7 64 bit (running on the same mac but under bootcamp) the launchpad doesnt work at all. i even had a bluescreen at some point when i selected it in live setup. I have a MPK61 and Machine controller connected to the AKAI and that is no problem on osx and win whatsoever. Also if i plug the Novation Launchpad directly into my mac it works fine too...

My bed is that Sinds theres no physical difference in the configuration and hubs dont require drivers, the chance is pretty high that the Novation Launchpad Midi driver on windows 7 64 bit edition somehow doesnt like hubs.
