Recreating this sound

Post by tha_metman » Sat Jul 31, 2010 1:48 am

Hi, simple question. how do you recreate this noise on a synth like operator? It's a light plucking noise.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IZuSpJ0H8Sg
-in this song it replaces the hi-hat starting at the beginning.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mG6RRxQtWD4
- also heard throughout this song, and is one of the first heard sounds

I can't quite get it right, i've tried combinations of sine waves and triangle waves through an enveloped filter. any one got any ideas?

The Operator has a built in white noise generator:

Try using really short midi dots and then play with the release time of it!

Thanks gunforhire but that's not the sound i'm looking for. it's not the hihat sound. it's the sound of hitting a block of wood pretty much. anyone have any idea how to recreate it?

You've got Operator? Try the preset Kit-808 - Mid Tom-808 sound, analyze it and tweak it. Shorten the amplitude envelope a bit, tweak the pitches, you'll come close. One key element is the pitch envelope(s), with short, steep decay.

If you change the oscillator routing (is it called that in Operator?), you'll notice that some routings sound more metallic than other. I'll leave it to you to read up on FM (if you need too) to figure out why. But do try to tweak both the pitch envelopes and oscillator frequencies with different routings.
