National Vinyl Record Day – August 12th - Invention of Phonograph - Thomas Edison, 1877.

First vinyl I bought (Music for that matter), was around 1981- three 45rpm singles in Woolworths; The Specials 'Rat Race', The bEAT ' Mirror in the Bathroom' & Madness, 'Night Boat to Cairo'.

Think they were all about £1 each

Used to pile all my singles up under my old record player's hooked 'arm thing' (Classic one speaker jobby with three speeds: 45, 33 and 78rpm!) and each would drop down with a nice clunk, the needle would drop noisily and hopefully the next record would play...

Happy days rude boy!

Still got every piece of plastic I've ever bought (edit:except for that copy of quadrophenia I left on the bus that one time)

Cool, but the early phonographs played recordings from a cylinder and not a disk "record". So not sure this date applies properly to vinyl.
