Transport controls on AKAI MPD 32

hello everyone. can someone help me figure out why i can't get the transport controls on the MPD 32 to work? i can midi assign the play, record, and stop buttons, but not the left and right controls. i have used all the options in the midi menu of mpd (midi,mtc, etc.) but nothing works out for me. any help is greatly appreciated. thanks
