USB to Firewire

hey all,

I am trying to link up my Yamaha GO46 (external audio interface type thing) with my laptop, Samsung R580. The GO46 is firewire but my laptop doesn't actually have any firewire ports so I bought a Firewire to USB cable.

When I plug it into my laptop, it recognises something is plugged in, it just doesn't know what. So i try installing the GP46 drivers, which would then make the laptop recognise what it is, however during installation there is a stage where it say "Now plug in your GO46," I do and yet nothing happens. The Installation doesn't see that its connected even though the laptop does.

I have absolutely no idea what to do, and whether in fact it is possible to do this type of this but seeing as the laptop saw 'something' it does seem odd. Help me!

From what ive seen those adaptors do not provide a real firewire connection, they are only usable for digital video.

You will need an Expresscard or something to that effect to give you a "real" firewire connection.

Your audio interface dont support firewire to usb. I think none of them do.. As Donnie mentioned before, i think those cables are for handycams.

Or actually get a USB 2.0 interface. Expresscard is also being phased out rapidly, and PCMCIA already was.

USB 2.0 interfaces will still run on USB 3.0 if/when that ever happens (Sound On Sound's Martin Walker in Aug 2010 SOS reckons we won't see USB 3.0 interfaces until 2012 at the earliest).

If you are on a low budget and don't need a lot of I/O Native INstruments Audio Kontrol 1, Edirol UA25-EX and Presonus Audiobox USB etc are fine, with a bit more cash the M-Audio Fast Track ULTRA R8 and RME Babyface, and if you have top dollar then the RME Fireface UC

so if i want my GO46 to work with my laptop, I need to buy an express card. Having a look at my laptop, it does have an EXP slot (which I'm guessing is for an express card) so would you think that this product would work?

I know that with Focusrite you need a TI chipset on the firewire card. I had problems on my big DAW until I got a new FW card with a TI chipset. I also use an expresscard (this one: http://www.amazon.com/2-Port-Expresscar ... 662&sr=8-2) on my laptop for the focusrite. I think most FW cards need TI chipsets from what I've read about the people buying the same exact FW cards I bought..

The Lindy one says it has a TI chipset so it should be OK

Has been a while since I responded so sorry for that; thought I'd first of all get a standard firewire expresscard to see if it worked without TI chipset so other people would know too.

It didn't...

SO am gonna get the Lindy card with the TI chipset and report back!
