my Free 30 day Ableton producing Vid Journal

Post by innerstatejt » Sun Sep 05, 2010 10:30 pm

Hey Guys,

To those who this might be interesting/helpful to, I've recorded the full process of creating 2 songs and a DJ mix in Ableton. There are 30 videos in total and each video will be up for 2 days. I'm currently on day 3 but I have the 1st video posted on Vimeo: http://vimeo.com/14687113

Don't think of this as a music tutorial but more of a Journal. I try to explain most of what I'm doing, but sometimes I get into a zone and stop talking. This is me starting with no ideas and pushing through the tangents, false starts and mental blocks to what I think are some decent results. Yes, in the 20ish hours of footage there will be some lulls but hopefully sharing this process will give others the confidence to push through their own creative blocks. Here's the link to the blog: http://www.MusicSoftwareTraining.com/Blog

enjoy,
Jason

Yeah cool idea but 20 hours is a lot to digest even if it is amazing.
Get some editing done and it will improve your doco/journal heaps !

That IS with editing ;-)

I've got plenty of video collections with tips, tricks and techniques that are nicely edited and packaged, but alot of people wanted to see the process. They wanted to know how I get from A to Z. To condense it too much is kinda to defeat the purpose. This certainly isn't for everyone, and it definitely isn't a definitive way to create but it IS free and broken into 30 chunks over 60 days for those who find this sort of thing useful.

I thought it was great that first day you showed. You are right, as a relative newbie I want to see how people work and where they say "ok thats good enough, now to move onto something else". A cracking idea, I wish you the best of luck with it.

Yeah I figured it was. Still 20 hours is a lot.
Maybe try a 'lite' version that is shorter.

That is just my opinion ... its a cool idea and a quicker version could bring more people in without 20 hours of powers !

Either way - do your thing and good work on being creative and pushing the boundaries.

Good idea,

I haven't listened yet... But when I saw the post it made me think of loads of videos / audio resources that i have heard that usually have quite a bit of ramble at the start / middle / end..

I never understand this.

Far easier would be Hi my name is twinstates, today i am going to show you how a compressor works. Then into the meat of it - here's how you set attach, release, threshold, ratio. start like this, adjust in this sequence, understand that this control gives you more meat, this makes it groove, this magnifies it etc.

It drives me mental that people waste so much time - op this isn't directed at you as I haven't checked your page yet but applicable to all people producing tutorials on anything..

Some of the music promotion things are the most amazing, there's one dude who's stuff is great but on some of his mp3's it 5 minutes of talking before we get to the meat of it.

A great number of audio concepts are explainable in 2-4 minutes.

It's why I generally prefer books as you can read at your own pace.

If people can't keep up then they can use the rewind button :)
I slipped into a daze, whilst I was there I heard the most startling music, it was at once familiar and alien, reassuring and unsettling.

I'm considering a repost of this series of videos if I find there is an interest. This was done August 2010, so perhaps a bit before the 1 year mark might be kinda fun. Anyone have an interest in a temporary repost? Let me now

Didn't get to see the videos when you started posting them. Would be awesome if you decided to post them again.

Not a fan of Drum Racks? What about it don't you like? I think it's one of the most versatile instruments Ableton has made.
