Bromance style chord progression

Hi,
I'm looking to try to understand how to recreate the kind of chord progression sound as used in Tim Bergs - Bromance:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8U3X4pxeIXA
It's the bit that starts ~= 1m12secs.
I guess my question in a broader scope is how people can listen to a sound and then recreate that with a VST? How can I learn a VST well enough (in my case Sylenth1) so that I can recreate a sound a hear, or a least a close representation of it
Thanks
Rich
