New Mac - Same old crashes!!
New Mac - Same old crashes!!
Well what can I say,
Brand new macbook pro:
i7, 4meg Ram, 500 gig hard drive.
Nothing installed other than the bog standard stuff and Live.
New set with no plug-ins.
Dragged an instance of Zebra 2 to a midi track and
WHAMMO
Straight out to the desktop.
After a year of constant crashed with my PC i was rather hoping I might get a set up that gave me confidence to perform
live again.
Come on Abes - Sort this out
Crash report on the way.

Are you sure you're using the latest version of Zebra2? I have that exact same laptop and just tried it multiple with Live 8.1.5 and it works fine.

They're all computers mate, and they WILL crash. Paying more will not change that unfortunately.
Lets hope you dont get the "white noise bursts" that many mac users have been experiencing.

I've got quite a few instances on another song.
Seems to be random, which is the bugger with Live.

Re: New Mac - Same old crashes!!
Did ya repair permissions?
My mac can go fine for months, then one day my usual showload set will crash live when I open it. Repair permissions and all is happiness-filled again. Jobs moves in mysterious ways.

If you haven't done a restart for a long time, it could be due to a funny sideeffect a "repair (or just check) permissions" has. It releases inactive RAM (sometimes/rarely memory can't be reclaimed by the system). Watch in Activity Monitor.Pitch Black wrote:Did ya repair permissions?

Excuse my ignorance (Mac Newbie )Did ya repair permissions?
How do you do this.
THe only thing I know about permissions is to read my windows external drive.
I'm just about to go out and get a 1T Iomega backup drive and Windows to Mac disk permission software.
i guess you need a new mac!
Cheers

Re: New Mac - Same old crashes!!
Woah there Hoss, Permissions and repairing permissions are built into osx. In your Applications folder, you'll find a folder named Utilities, in there you'll find an app called Disk Utlity.
Boot Disk utility, select your system drive (called Macintosh HD, unless you've renamed it) then click Repair Permissions. This will take about 3-4 minutes. Thats it. See if it has any effect on your crashing problem.
This is pretty much the ONE main bit of OSX maintenance you need to do from time to time. It's recommended that you repair permissions after installing software.

Hope this helps, and err... welcome to the RDF!!

Hi Pitch Black
Thanks for the explanation.
I'll give it a bash once I've finished all my instals.
Just got Komplete 6 done after a disk freeze half way through last night
F**king technology - love it and hate it in equal measure
Cheers

Re: New Mac - Same old crashes!!
Yeah, repair permissions or try shaking a rubber chicken on top the machine - it'll help about as much
If you're getting permission related error messages on your operating system files it might help, otherwise it's
a waste of time.
Repairing permissions is a legacy from the time people ran non-OSX software os OSX. Because old OS 9 software
had no knowledge of permissions they tended to screw them up. And it certainly won't free up any memory,
if you wan't to know why you might be seeing more free memory after repairing permissions you might want to read up
on virtual memory, paging and caching on modern OS's/filesystems...
If you want to know why a program crashed, look at the crash report that gets written in your
home directory -> Library/Logs/CrashReporter. The crash report will tell you what the software
was doing at the time of the crash.

Definitely learn about the inner workings of a healthy operating system, and by all means stay away from the internet! Disable/uninstall all Apple spyware, iTunes etc, and don't allow a bunch of bullshit to start when your computer boots, and you might be amazed at what your machine can do.
