how the hell do I sucessfully backup sample-based sets?

I m getting deep enough into ableton and working on an EP and an album and I need to back up the music because I have a macbook from 06 that I know is old enough to shit the bed. I have the .als files saved on an external, but I think its just midi info, not the complete song.

I know i need to collect all and save. Is this save self contained or is that different?

also does the song have to be saved to a project to have it save properly?

is there any way to back up my ableton library as well on the external?

Collect All and Save will make everything self contained. To back up your library, open the Live preferences and look to see where the library is installed. Use Finder to navigate to that location and manually drag and drop the library to your external drive.

yes use collect all and save. it makes new copies of all the samples and puts them into the project's folder.

yes, save it to a project folder.

the Library is just a directory. look the preferences to find it's location. the Library is a project, just like your song projects.

make a quick stupid song and practice saving it off. do dumb things with it and see what Live does.

tip: only let Live put things into your Library.

so it have to remain in the project folder for the chops to remain chopped, correct?

i tried sending a track to my buddy, took it out of the project folder and send it. opened it up and the samples were missing in the song. dragged the from the samples folder to the set to their places and they were un chopped. then reopened the set, put it back in the project and the song was fine again.

so i need to send the song as a project? should I treat every song as a project? I've been treating as project = album.
is this assessment wrong?

In Live speak, a Project is basically a song. So if you want to send someone a song, you need to self-contain the project and send them that.
