guitar synth as midi controller for live? can it work?

Post by yogitengu » Tue Dec 21, 2004 4:15 am

Does any one know if you can use a guitar equipped with a Roland Guitar Synth pickup as a midi controller with Live (or Logic Pro 7 or Reason etc)? I can't play keys as guitar is my main instrument and I'm trying to find a better way to do midi input. Thanks in advance!

Sure it will work, but be prepared for major latency issues. All the Roland Gitsynth systems have midi out. Theres a whole tutorial on using a midi guitar setup on the Propellerheads website.

we use roland gr-20 with a gk-3 pickup and it works pretty well
because of the latency you may have to adjust your technique a little
and maybe envelopes on some sounds
it also looks more sexy when playing live
if you play the guitar
than to be hunched over your laptop
tweaking reaktor parameters

is there no way to get better latency with one of those pickups?

i'll buy one regardless but there has to be some way to make it better ... right?

How much latency is there?? I was thinking of getting the GR-20. But if it is more than 10 ms I might not bother.

I play a "Godin Multiac Nylon" Guitar with an "Axon AX100" Guitar to Midi Converter. This is very cool, not more then 8ms latency. The people do not belive and say "what!! you play Violin with a Guitar!! wow, you are so cool" an then they buy my CD. :D

I use a GI-20 at only 3ms latency and it works great. The only time it has trouble keeping up is for those fast hammer on and pull off lines. Even responds to string bending. Kinda pricey though.

That's exciting news. Would you mind explaining to me how you set it up,
for example what plugs into what and what each thing does as I'm new to midi/midi controllers so I don't understand all the intricacies.

Thanks in advance,

Yogi

I use a GI-10 as a midi controller and i don't find that the latency is noticeably worse than from a keyboard. A bigger prob than latency for me is getting realistic/consistent dynamics, but it's a very handy piece of kit nonetheless.
