scratchy sound....in my live projects....argh...help.....

Post by lolita3000 » Sat Oct 09, 2010 6:25 pm

Hi everyone,

This morning I opened my old live ableton’s projects just to check my former works.
To my surprise when I opened the project and pressed play to listen to it, it started to play but I could also hear some scratchy noises trhoughout the whole song (project).
Like a kind of old vinyl scratchy sound.

I haven’t done anything particular lately that could have damaged my projects.
I restarted my computer and all that but still I can hear this ….scratchy sound.

I have saved all of my projects on an external hard disk and I checked the same projects on it and the sound was perfect so it’s really strange, the scratchy sound appears only on my D/: disk. (where I save my projects too)

It just seems as if my project was damaged.
I never exeprienced this before.
I’m using a pc, not a mac. ( I know that mac users never have any troubles but I’ll get on someday!!)
I hope someone can shed some light on this…….thanksss a lot :s
Lola

Can't give any advice about file corruption, but I've had several occasions where plugins are causing scratchiness and it takes a while to track it down. Izotope Vinyl is a big culprit, and sometimes Live's built in Vinyl Distortion. Plugins that emulate analog warmth can cause unknown fuzz too.

you need to do this to your hard drive:

Image

pop it out and give it a rinse.

j/k
see if the sounds are just on one track. if it is then see if you're clipping somewhere in that track's devices.

or maybe CPU load, turn off apps you don't need in the background.

or drive space, you should have at least 10% of your drive unused.

or buffer size, go to a huge value, see if that fixes it.

those are the usual culprits.

hi guys,
thanks for replying.

my hard drive has more space than enough so it's not that.....:(

the noise is not only on one track it's "on" the whole song while playing.
the buffer size, ain't that either I cheked it already....
well.... from what i feel it could be that the projects are damaged.
thanks for replying.
I'll see what I can do now.
thank god I saved them on an external hard disk.

if you have any other ideas don't hesitate to let me know.

thank you

yes it's more something like corrupted data.

anyways it's ok now i've saved everything before so it's cool.

Thanks a lot.

have a great weekend

Glad to hear you've already solved the problem, but I wanted to chime in with this:

I try to avoid storing any clips or samples on an external USB drive if I'm using them in a large project. In my experience USB is simply not fast enough to keep up if you're pulling in huge amounts of data (like, tons o'megabyte .WAV files) simultaneously.

I used to experience dropouts that sound similar to what you were hearing, when I started referencing a lot of large .WAV samples I'd moved to an external USB 2.0 drive in order to save space on my internal hard drive. A "collect all and save", or simply moving the large samples to my C:\ drive until after I'd bounced everything down, worked wonders for me.

FWIW I have a hard time going with the corrupt file idea.

1 - often when data is corrupted software won't use it.

2 - when digital goes wrong it goes really wrong, it's not subtle static, it's large loud pops and snats.

it's far more likely to be due to buffer sizes, incorrect sound card driver or stuff like that. something obvious, not a random file corruption.

dunno, I don't know you so I can't gauge how well you know all this computershit.

my $0.02 after seeing this thread bop around for a while.

I've had this happen to me on my MacBook. The project was a template I created with Superior Drummer 2 where I use multitrack mode to route each mic to a separate track in Live. There are some processing plugs but the project doesn't use much CPU and I still hear the crackling even with only SD2 engaged. The funny thing is that the scratching would be more or less noticeable depending on which drum track was playing.

I think it might come from some abnormality that was introduced while saving the live set... although I really don't know because this has happened on only two of the projects I've ever created.
