Selecting and launching clips with Behringer BCR 2000 ?

Post by digitaldove » Mon Oct 25, 2010 10:09 am

I'm gonna buy a Behringer BCR 2000.

But before buying that, I have a question.

Can I select (or navigate) and launch clips in Ableton live with Behringer BCR 2000?

I would like to use one Behringer BCR 2000 and laptop for djing.

Yeah you can in a sense, it's not very userfriendly but possible.
I use my BCR2000 like this sometimes when i need to trigger something very occasionly within a song.

Below the top row of knobs there are 16 on/off buttons (light red when ON).
Each button has either an on or off state, its not a trigger.
So you need to use one button to trigger the clip.
Then use another button as an off trigger (to blank clip).

To be honest I wouldnt use this function all the time, itd be too fiddly.
Invest in an Akai APC20/APC40 for lots of cliplaunch buttons. Combined with the BCR you are sorted for controls!

^disagree

IMO the BCR is VERY user friendly. best bang for the buck of gear I've tried. you don't need an on and an off trigger, just set the button to the same value for max and min. that value would be 0 or 128.

in my DJ setup, this is what I do (I'm not a DJ, this is just how I set it up to goof off with songs.) the only limitation is that it's limited to 8 tracks but you can do more with more presets. I'll write as if you're only using 8 tracks.

hit midi learn and new buttons pop up above the tracks. these are clip launch buttons. they launch the clip for the selected scene.

assign each of the 8 buttons to the clip launch buttons.

on the right side of the Live GUI there are buttons to scroll through scenes, assign this to an encoder.

9 assignments and you can scroll through as many scenes as you want and launch clips on 8 tracks.

+1

For the price, the BCR is really powerful. If you do get one, I recommend the first thing you do is learn how to program the buttons and knobs functions straight from the unit, not using the computer editor. You basically hit the Edit button, move/press whatever you want to edit, then use the top knobs row to set its parameters. It's the fastest onboard MIDI controller editor I've found, and it will help you unlock the full potential of the unit.

Could you give an example on when this builtin editor is better?

Adam A7 monitors
Novation Launchpad

Got The BCR and The BCF and they rocks! Take the time to read the manual a couple of times and you will be rolling. Its a nice way to control all plugins and faders in Live on the fly, i could not live without them, they bring the real live feeling to your setup. With Reason the controllers are even more amazing, hands on on every knob when you load Reason. Best buy for money! I will buy two BCF's more and two BCR's in the next months to have the utimative setup.......

Go for it!

Well, on my mac, the Java editor app doesn't even run, so +1 for the bulit in editor :P

Other than that, I've found it to be way quicker than my other controllers, a Kontrol 49 and an MPD32, either using the built in editor or editing from the computer.

For example, to edit an encoder on the BCR, you hold the edit button, move the encoder, and instantly you have access to all its parameters on the top encoder row. You tweak it, exit edit mode and save and it takes only a few seconds. The MPD 32 requires you to push the Edit button, move the encoder, select the kind of control the encoder sends with the editing encoder, push it to enter, then move around with the < and > buttons to select what you want to edit (channel, CC, min and max values), push the encoder to finish, then save your preset. Those are many more steps and it's slower. The editor app isn't much better as it requires a lot of clicking around and typing. I love using the MPD32, but in comparison editing it feels like editing with a stick.

man i have two of them, and they are AMAZING! when you really figure them out, you can do magic.
how i use it to launch the clips:

i set them as a "note", so they do actually behave as a triggers. the upper row i use to PLAY the clip, and the lower row to STOP.
and when i scroll trough the scenes, as i come to the clip that is currently playing, the PLAY button in the upper (PLAY) row lights up, it is useful to me for better orientation.
i scroll trough the scenes with the two buttons in the lower right part of the BCR, and the other two i use to launch the entire scene, and to stop all clips....

as they also receive the midi message, on your led pointer you can see the actual status of assigned knob or button, if you move the knob in the Live by mouse, you will see the led pointer moving on the bcr too, just be sure to turn ON "Remote OUT" in midi preferences.

as mentioned above, they indeed ARE, a piece of cake when it comes to programing ;)

i am planing to buy BCF soon and it`s totally worth any cent.

cheers! have fun!

how can you assign one button to start and stop the clip? i tried it like you said long time before but was unsuccessful :-/
i don`t know any other way than to assign one button to trigger the play, and one to stop it.
i know you can set value, but that value remains on the same button which have the same channel and parameter...?

maybe assign the same button to the "play" and "stop" in audio track? :?

i am not at home so i can not try it till monday :x

Bang on man! Loads of potential once you get to grips with it.

Do I have a defective unit here, refering to my BCR2000. With the bottom row of pods, when I move the forth pod, the led light up but so do the led's on the last pod in that row. It just follows whatever I'm doing with the forth pod. :x

by pod you mean encoder?

they're probably set to the same midi cc. so, one goes into Live then Live spits it back out and they both respond.
