New Live GUI

Post by JBlongz » Fri Oct 29, 2010 5:37 pm

I saw this program called Rax http://www.audiofile-engineering.com/rax/ and its structure looks like ableton's clip view. However, I like the graphical quality. Is there anyway that Ableton can eventually replicate this?

We definitely need SOMETHING!. I like the original look to live because it has a simplistic learning approach. Perhaps they should call it 'Novice' mode, and reserve a Pro skin for those who use it on a power level.

Totally agreed. Live is a wonderful program, but quite frankly looks cheap, old, and ugly (IMO). Just like with all things aesthetically pleasing, people are drawn to and enjoy such things. Just look at how car, cell phone, software, and contemporary art design have changed rapidly over the past decade. When I open Ableton and see this flat, boring, color-depressing program it doesn't exactly make me happy to be in such an environment. Take a look at the upcoming Sonar X1. While I understand that they are each their own programs a lot of people are excited to see the modern, fresh visually environment. Just like some of the Adobe creation software... it's just freaking beautiful and almost inspiring to work with. Ableton caters to artists, and artists like art. Please Ableton, give your wonderful program a beautiful GUI.

I like the new OhmStudio look. It looks like an updated Ableton Live, with some added flexibility.
Obviously there's no session view, because for some reason other manufacturers just don't understand it.

-1, i hope they keep it like it is. If you don't like the colours, change it. Rax looks ugly, Ohmstudio like an iApple plaything...go away with it...

I dont mean it needs to have the same color as rax, but the image quality should be better. In fact it should come with several themes as live currently does.

Anyway, i think Live's gui has always been a part of the whole concept. An easy overviewable, easy understandable mainpage without any useless decoration, 3D shadowish nonsense that doesn't help you at work anyway. If they change that they look like any other crap DAW out there. I hope they don't want that...

well cubase/nuendo and logic aren't bad looking daws. In fact, Digital Performer is very simple yet offers better graphical representation. Many of Live's skins can become tiring and deaden my mood. I was fortunate to spark it up a bit with the Ableton Skin Editor from SonicTransfer, but its lacking still.

I appreciate that Live focused on featurse before GUI, and there is a really great featurs set to work with. Perhaps its time to do a lil GUI work before tweaking any further.

Overall, I just wan to be confident that SOME type of GUI overhaul in intended sometime in the future.

I agree. Live's gui is pleasing to the eye.

Maybe in clip view, but arrangement easily gets tiring to look at when dealing with an average of 30 tracks

The only thing I'll agree to is more colors for clips & tracks.

If there are any changes in Live's GUI i hope they are very minimal. I agree with the common complaint that clips in the arrange view could be a little more defined on the edges, and the space issues when expanding the clip view also could be fixed. But generally I wouldn't want any major changes personally.

My GUI suggestions:
-many more colours
-APC's red frame appear in arrange mode around the track parameters
-viewable track fader as an option
-many more key shortcuts
-thiner automation lines
-linked windows (a selected track in session should appear in the middle of the arrange and vice versa, as option)
