Velocity ramping [solved: ableton sucks].
Velocity ramping [solved: ableton sucks].
I want a note to start at a velocity of 60 and end at 120, instead of just starting at 60 and fading out, is there any way to do this sort of ramp?

Re: Velocity ramping
Hi, you can do this by editing the note-off velocity. right click in the velocity area of a clip, and select "show note off velocity."
Re: Velocity ramping
I tried that, doesnt work. Note off velocity doesnt appear to do anything at all. Is there any other way to do this?
Re: Velocity ramping
Thats why im asking the forum, ableton telling me noteoff velocity is a useless feature wasnt of much help.
Thanks for the plugin suggestion but it doesnt do anything either. I guess theres no way to shape velocity.

Re: Velocity ramping
Did you read ShelLuser's suggestion about the Velocity MIDI Effect? Try enveloping or automating it.
Re: Velocity ramping
this doesnt work for me, i shaped with an envelope and the plugin reports a changing velocity but it has no effect.
I am trying to get the velocity values to be shaped over time. whatever this velocity plugin does it does it without affecting the actual velocity values, must be a post filter or something.

Re: Velocity ramping
oh i figured out what's wrong, the velocity effect applies to an entire midi clip, whereas each note in a clip has its own velocity, so its ableton's design thats retarded, not its effects.

Hi,
I'm not sure I understand what you're after. Velocity is something that is applied to a note, globally. Ableton didn't invent it, it's how MIDI works. Note-off velocity is there for samplers that play a sample on note-off, so that they can use the note-off velocity when the note end - for example, to play a sample that is the "tail" of the previous sample. Some of our Grand Piano presets use that.
Now, you saw you want a MIDI note to not fade out, but have the volume of the sound go up? the only way I know of, is to play with the envelope of the sound.
Or did i misunderstand what you want?
Kind regards,
Amaury

yeah I'm really not sure what you mean. Velocity is velocity - it's whatever value it is when you hit the note and it doesn't fade out.
Volume changing over time is controlled with an amplitude envelope.
in other words, what instrument are you trying to play and have you found the amplitude envelope for it? if so, you set the initial level to 60 (or at least an approximation of what 60 out of 127 would be in dB) then set the sustain to 120 and use the attack to set how long this fade in will take.
If this is not what you mean then you need to be more specific.
also, if you are wanting different settings for different notes then you can try using the vel>time or key>time parameters (at least in Operator, not sure off the top of my head which other Ableton instruments have this)

Re: Velocity ramping [solved: ableton sucks].
What im looking for is to simply have the velocity of a note start at one number and gradually go up to another. This isnt about volume, its about ableton sending velocity values per beat as if i had drawn a new note with that velocity, without me actually having to draw a ton of 32nd notes to create the curve. I'm just looking for a way to shape velocity like i would shape anything else.

To get a new velocity, you need a new note. Already played notes can't have other velocities than Note On and Note Off. You could maybe try building something using the Arpeggiator and Velocity plugs.

Your best bet here is really to work with envelopes. If you need something that triggers every time you hit a new note, look at the enveloping possibilities within the plug-in that you're using.poof wrote:What im looking for is to simply have the velocity of a note start at one number and gradually go up to another.
