I play drums in a shoegaze/post-rock band called Tracing Figures, and we use Ableton for real time vocal FX and sequenced synths/drum machines. I play to a click track for each song, which is sequenced within Ableton.
Tomorrow is our CD release in San Francisco (at the Rickshaw Stop if anyone is interested) and I've put together a lighting design for each of our songs. The lights are my own DIY project, called ColorSynths which have been mentioned previously on these forums.
The lights respond to MIDI commands (notes and CCs) and are each on their own MIDI channel. In Ableton I have eight MIDI tracks (one per channel/ColorSynth), the first has a recorded sequence and then using a max 4 live patch I am delaying the MIDI on each subsequent channel by a 16th note. So channel one has the sequence, channel 2 listens to channel 1 and delays one 16th, channel 3 listens to channel 2 and delays on 16th, and so on. This creates the cascade effect that you see.
Our stage setup will have the eight ColorSynths mounted on straight mic stands and spread out at different heights so as to create a starfield effect. Unfortunately the video camera in my iPhone can't keep up with the colors or the strobing of the lights, so it just gives a general idea of what is possible. The music playing is actually from our CD, but is re-imported (with no warping) into the Live set that we use on stage, so the timing is exactly the same as if we were performing the song live.
We should have some video from the show tomorrow night which I will share in this thread when it's available, I'd welcome any questions and feedback.
