learning compression in live

hi i would like to learn about compression when it comes to making beats
been useing samples and loops up till now but want to get stuck in to live
and make my own baets as i feel lazy using loops and i want to know how to make my own fat beats

and i hear compression is the key

if anyone could point me to videos or articles that would b graet cheers
