connecting midi instrument

Post by Arrrpirate » Mon Nov 22, 2010 9:35 am

i have a midi guitar from the 80s, and it isnt usb or anything fancy, but it does have midi out. i was wondering how i can set up live to be able to receive the note data sent out by my guitar. and should i connect it with a usb to midi, or via midi cables into my fast track pro? thanks :)

I thought all 80s midi guitars would have had a special box to make it work

"I only have experience with the Roland GK3 and subsequent other chain parts, so I'll answer from that POV.

The pickup itself doesn't actually turn your signal into a midi signal. It just sends hexaphonic information down your lead, I think this is the case with all pickups of this style (and piezos too) but I'm not certain.

So you need something to turn it into a MIDI signal.

The Roland GI series of units do just that. I have a GR unit, this turns the signal into MIDI and has inbuilt instruments. The GI series dont have inbuilt instruments, they just convert the guitar signal into a MIDI signal for using to control MIDI devices, such as your laptop, or a keyboard module or whatever."

no, my guitar is midi. it sends midi data to its onboard computer to produce its own sounds, or you can send the notes via midi out to another device.

I'd use the Fast Track Pro, no use using additional hardware.

If you have the guitar and the FTP, have you experimented with connecting it yet?? That would seem to be the best way to figure out your plan.

Most MIDI guitar situations involve MIDI channels 1 - 6 transmitting each string. This gives you a few options, you can either accept all midi channels on an instrument, or have 6 instrument channels, each receiving MIDI from the guitar. (probably with same instances of the instrument). This would then allow you to set Polyphony on each instrument to 1, and turn on some portamento or glide action (for the strings to act more realistically)

The final thing to consider is the variance in velocity. Which you could easily use the Velocity tool to calibrate.
