Performance Controllers Limitations

Gday fellas,

I am kind of tired of those APCs, launchpads.. too expensive for what they offer if you think that would be awesome to have a new kind of performance controller made of a (let's say 17") touch screen display where to route the mac's video output and using the same features developed on trackpads (rotate, pinch, slide etc) iPad-way.

what do ya think? :D

personally i spend lot of cash in various midi controllers (doepfer drehbank, behrigher BCF, evolution UC16, korgZero8, my binome having apc and launchpad) and felt always limited,at least never fully satified on some aspects.

..until the day i discovered sensomusic usine, awesome piece of soft that let you design your own personnal adapted setups without limits for touchscreens,
as well as enhance any existing midi hw, by adding banks, shift functions or extra features you want like midi lfos, rec CC automations synced loopers ect.
I still kept a very small ultra portable unit (evolution x-session old uc16 with crossfader) with real knobs, with a touchscreen and usine setup. i was not satified with APC where you don't catch at all the session clips with no colors nor names or need
high concentration to remember your devices access and made an OSC clone in 6 month you can see in my sig, with is imo
much cool to see where you are during perf. I feel totally unlimited since i went to usine.

sadly won't work on mac at seem you are but i would run bootcamp only for usine, i did by the past.

Well, we're working on it... dunno if you've seen the Konkreet Performer already: http://forum.ableton.com/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=152969

It's designed from the outset to do what multitouch controllers can do that physical controllers can't: control multiple parameters all at the same time (e.g. 4 fingers = all 8 parameters of an Ableton rack at the same time) and gestures (pinch & rotate to control a selected subset of all those parameters).

I also like using physical controllers for that tactile feedback with faders and knobs, so we're trying to avoid doing that on the touch screen...

...though I think this specifically wouldn't be too great: the DAW's interface was designed for mouse pointer usage and its precise single touch. The best iPad apps are those designed from the beginning with multitouch and finger-sized controls in mind, not fiddly one-to-one copies of the laptop/PC software.

ah so it's ya ah yeah, then you know about the mutitouch questions :) nice stuff guys.

note that in usine you are note limited to usual knobs or faders as well, you have access to any raw multitouch datas
with all multitouch info ang gesture ID, in a full patching easy nodal programming environment.
so you can as well invent your 10 fingers arrays with pinch or stuff like that make time related functions,
filters awis as im experiencing ect, unlimited.

I agree on the one to one question
I went for a one to one copy of session view only, my controllers are for exemple impossible real combo swich-fader
or 8 arrays probgrssive controls via lines conecting the steps, morphers, rec loopers ect. But i reckon i will pick up some clevers ideas of konkrete :)

but imo if want to feel totally free and unlimited to build your own setup, I tested lot's of software, no one can match the endless possibilities of Usine, wich is the only true multitouch full modular software avaible actually, and is designed since 10 years with that goal in mind by it's creator, who worked for long with lemur and max msp and touchscreens.
for me it's 3 years in advance relating performances concepts on everything else, including maxMsp/reaktor/lemur.
you have a build in VideoTracker, Wiimote or gamepads Modules, anyUsBdevice bytes access, you can directly route to
VST parameters, recall presets, make data loopers ect absolutely awesome.
