This Flute Sound?

Post by Silwolffe » Tue Nov 30, 2010 7:05 pm

Hey,

I love the sound of the flute that comes in at 0:10, here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6IOBQvxMjb8

It sounds like the 'enigma' flute. I'm wondering if anyone has come across a patch that sounds similar to this, or how one could create a similar timbre?

Thanks. :)

Ugh - no accounting for taste...

How about Live 8 Library Wind-Pan Flute as a starting point...?

re lol

silwolffe: not perfect but try some simple sin wavform with pitch bend and legato and lot of reverb half wet,
but maybe the 5$ flute will sound better...

the specific sound in the OP's example seems like something from a keyboard of the early 90's that combines small samples and synthesis, like a roland d-50 (I'm thinking aboud the bottle blower preset) or a yamaha sy-35, etc...

I own a xiao, but really have no good way of getting it in to Live without spending money on a microphone (not using my shitty headset). The xiao has a different timbre than what I am looking for.

I've mucked around in fm8 to try to replicate the sound in the video, but couldn't really get it to fit what I wanted (I suck at patching stuff from scratch). I first started from scratch, then went to modifying the 'tech flute' preset in the matrix. The 'tech flute' yielded better results, of course...
Thanks for this!

IMO you need to use a sampled attack and then synthesized body to the sound becuase the example is a pan pipe type sound with a lot of breath sound on the attack.

I think FM8 is not the best choice (on its own anyway) for this sound.

The Roland D50, Yamaha SY77/99 or Korg M1 or Wavestation have lots of sounds which approximate that.

These were synths used on Enigma's records too, being the big 'must have' synths of the day (along with the Akai S1000 etc).
