I already had Live suite and Max. Did I just waste $99?

I already had both pieces of software. Did i need to pay for the max for live plugin?

Yes. Max for Live, while not technically a separate piece of software, must be purchased in order to run M4L devices inside Live 8.

@OP — Just to be completely clear:

NO you did not waste $99.
YES you did need to buy M4L.
