Avoiding decimals (120.xx) in Live's BPM

Post by mikdog » Sat Dec 25, 2010 9:46 pm

Hello,

I'm a lurker, going to start getting involved.

Uhm, so I'm using Live and Modul8 on 2 different laptops, my brother plays teh musiks and I make teh visuals on my laptop. We have an Ethernet cable and Modul8 is picking up Live's BPM coz we've created a MIDI SESSION in the Midi Settings thing and I'm connected to him and him to me. (Should we be connected to each other like this? We've both created sessions. Maybe this is troublesome?)

Anyway, when he cranks up the tempo on Live, my BPM is lagging a little behind. Takes a bit to catch up. I have to hit SYNCH quite often. BUT, a further issue is that he has assigned a MIDI slider to the BPM on his Edirol PCR-300. We've created a minimum and maximum for the BPM to stay between in the MIDI window in Live. So, Live's BPM can have 2 decimal places when he does this, so he often ends up with something like 155.23 or something. My Modul8 BPM is in round numbers only so I'll get 155. Meaning his BPM is .23 faster than me, so I keep having to resynch.

My guess is that Live is dividing the possible variations of the slider with the BPM bracket we've set, meaning we're ending up with weird numbers (.xx) Any way of keeping the numbers for Live's BPM whole, so that its 155 and not 155.72?

That way my Modul8 and his Live will synch a bit better and I won't keep on having to resynch.

(As a side, I've read among the forums here that things DO go out of Synch and its worth getting a master midi clok so that Live and Modul8 both become slaves to the beat. Anyone have experience with this?)

Thanks,

Mike
