Follow action wishes

Post by bonsak » Fri Jan 14, 2005 10:47 am

Hi
Follow actions are great but theres some small things that could be done to make it even better.

1. An option to go to next clip when finished without having to enter bars
and beats and all that. This is just too obvious and should be default.
In most cases im using the out point of a loop as time for next clip anyway,
so why do i have to tell Live something it already knows :-)

2. An option to start next clip from random or quantized/random point.
This would be great for alot of things but maybe fills is the most obvious.

3. An option to play next clip in next track would also be great for more complex stuff. Folllow actions could just wander around in the tracks.
Could be fun just to watch actually :-)

4. Make it possible to use TAB key when entering bars and beats.
This is just to complicated now.

5. Make it so that i dont have to stop/start playback to make new
members to follow groups work.

Regards
Bonsak

Agree. The FA could both get really deep and at the same time ease up some common tasks
1 and 2 would makes things easier and more fun.
3 has been discussed in some threads, with several additions

yes please!!!

follow actions are great (even in its first appearance) already, but could be so much deeper. endless possibilities.

a new window in the clip view bar would be great (like the sample and envelopes view). in this space you could have a system of adding follow actions. ie, start with a clean slate, press ctrl/apple+f to add a follow action. have as many as you want. press ctrl/apple+F to add a probability option to a certain follow action. this way you can have multiple follow actions, activating other clips (also in other tracks), muting tracks, turning off fx, starting envelopes (which of course can be routed to anything).

even greater would be START actions. so, when you fire a clip, things start happening as well. something like scenes, but much deeper (see above).

is it possible to have scenes automatically advance? like a follow action. if not then that would be a very useful feature too. to have follow actions on scenes.

the idea doesn't comme from me (as usual  ), but a a "any other" action would be great, in order not to repeat the same clip

Toggle ON/OFF for follow action

Post by sraposa » Mon Feb 14, 2005 7:04 pm

i second the motion for a toggle on/off switch for follow actions.

i see 2 main uses:

1) if i've applied follow actions to a clip and i'm still in "tweak mode" with that clip, it would be nice to turn off the actions so Live doesn't jump to another clip while i'm working.

2) it would be nice to easily toggle the follow actions while i'm performing. i could see this being useful at the set level, track level, and/or clip level. the idea is that i could build a set that contains lots of randomness and variations using the follow actions. and then, by toggling the actions OFF, i could temporarily gain more control in a live situation.
