Live and Tap Tempo?

Hey all,

We're thinking about using Live for our gigs, and I've been assigned to do the research...

Some of our songs start with just the vocalist, or a guitar and vocalist. I have an Electrix MoFX that has a tap tempo button, wondering if I can link this via midi, sending the tempo to Live.

Is anyone doing anything like this? Our basic concern is being able to adapt our computer loops to a tempo set by an acoustic instrument.

Tap Tempo will be available in the next update , according to Monolake posts on the wishlist forum

Thanks for the reply - I realize that it will be native in the next version. I'm actually asking about external control in setting Live's tempo.

I'm wondering if anyone is using an outside tap-tempo controller, such as the MoFX, a pedal controller, or a similar piece of gear that sends a midi signal, and could (hopefully) send a bpm signal to live.

Does this work? I've been able to do it with other pieces of software...

Syncing to an external source works, of course - no matter whether you dialed or tapped in the speed on the master. But be warned that live syncing with tap tempo while you play can be a major hassle - in my experience, retapping a running track into sync in CD-DJ style is hard to impossible with most drumboxes. For chasing records or live musicians, you'll have to go with some sync box tracking the audio (iirc Redsound still makes two models) or something you can tie to a e-drum kick trigger like the Kurzweil ER-1.

i use an old roland sbx sync box to send midi clock to a ton of things... live, 2 electrix repeaters, an electribe, an old oberheim dx, and a ton of other time based effects (including a mo-fx).

the sbx has a tap that changes the tempo. it works great, plus it has a metronome click that our drummer can follow.

i've also run live synced to the repeater's clock. presumably the mo-fx would work just as well (if perchance you wanted to sync the electrix stuff to another clock, it has to be really stable, otherwise it'll go a little out. i'm not sure how stable the clock live sends is... never tried it.).

EVERYTHING syncs perfectly. the only problem comes with HUGE tempo changes. live doesn't handle them well. but really, what song would ever change from 130 to 54bpm?

Hi, Lostmyshape.
I am qurious to hear your band playing live (eny sound examples)
do you have a website, like your idea of using live instruments(drummer) and electronic loop devices.
Do you mike the drummer, and what are the other instruments becides Live and Electrix repeaters etc, how many people etc.?

like to share my live on stage experience with yours.

Checked out your site... pretty cool.

my band is heading toward something like what you're doing... we're sort of rising from the ashes of a previous band that broke up because 2 members had to leave (grad school and military). it was a straight ahead rock band with a lot of jazz influence.

the new project has just started. so far we're 3: drummer, guitarist who does a lot of looping with a repeater and then messes with effects (electrix filter factory plus the gamut of guitar player toys). i also play a bit of guitar and mess around with LIVE plus effects. both the guitarist and i loop vocals also.

we'd like our drummer to play some percussion also: maybe a vibraphone (too big?) or a midi instrument like a mallet kat. we're also toying with the idea of finding a bassist. currently the other guitarist loops a bass line with a repeater loop set an octave low and run throught the filter factory. sounds pretty good, but he's got his hands full trying to do so much at once.

as far as amplifying, we mic the drums and guitar amps... would really like to invest in some in-ear monitors so we can hear each other better and get rid of my pre-listening headphones.

this post is starting to get epic... anyway, no recordings yet, but soon. i'll post a link as soon as we get something we're happy with. we're trying to head towards electonica but with rock and pop in mind (if that makes any sense). as far as sampling, i'm most interested in rhythmic sounds (think bjork or brian eno and david byrne's "life in the bush of ghosts") our major influences are tortoise, sound tribe sector 9: www.sts9.com, early micheal Jackson, jamiroquai, jim o'rourke, the sea and cake.
