my new APC 40 is popping, can anyone help?

I just got my apc40, and there is a cracking/glitchy sound when i hit the clip launch buttons. The only way i can fix this is turning my latency all the way up which puts me about a 1/8 note behind the music. Usually I can run many tracks, multiple instrument racks, synth vst's, external instrument playing my nord, a keyboard controller, external hard drive, no problem. on the apc 40, i can't even play a few clips on a single channel at low latency without the sound crapping.
I'm using live 8.2 on an XP machine with MOTU 8pre as my interface. any ideas?

Conflicting control surface or other midicontrollers...start from scratch in your ableton midisync preferences?

Problem solved. in preferences/midi i changed all port types from directmusic to MME. Everything works great now!
