Setting sample rate/bit depth in Live and MOTU Ultralite

Post by dumaisaudio » Wed Jan 12, 2011 3:51 am

Hi, this is probably a dumb question, but I just want to make sure. I'm looking to start working in 24 bit/48kHz. I've set the sample rate and bit depth in Live to those settings, but I only see a setting for sample rate in the MOTU setup, nothing for bit depth. So I'm guessing that whatever audio I send into the audio interface, it's up to whatever program I'm using to set the bit depth? I'm a little fuzzy as to how it works, and I'm having a hard time searching because when I Google it, all I come up with is product descriptions. Thanks for the help!

The short answer is I don't know.

The longer answer is it might come in from the sound card at some raw high bitrate (24/32?) at a certain sample rate, then it's mixed internally at 32bit floating point, then records to the hard disk at the bit rate to 24/16/whatever as is set in the preferences in the "record warp launch" tab as a wav/aiff. That's a stab in the dark though. Never really thought about it!

And that's what I assumed, but I've never really seen anything on the topic. Thanks for the response, hopefully others will see and have some insight as to the specifics.

Have you tried the actual manual?
16-BIT AND 24-BIT RECORDING
The UltraLite-mk3 system handles all data with a
24-bit signal path, regardless of the I/O format.
You
can record and play back 16-bit or 24-bit audio files
at any supported sample rate via any of the
UltraLite-mk3’s analog or digital inputs and
outputs. 24-bit audio files can be recorded with any
compatible host application that supports 24-bit
recording.

Thanks. I actually don't have the manual, from just now looking at the MOTU site, they only added them after they released the Ultralite Hybrid.
