I need a tip on delay accents within a clip loop

Post by ixmxm » Thu Jan 20, 2011 8:55 am

I don't really know how to search for this and it's probably fairly simple. I have a loop with 1/16 notes that create a plucking sound. I want to accent one of the notes to have it ring out with some delay and reverb at one point during the phrase. All my effects are setup how I want it to sound but I want to learn how to let the delay ring out on only one note without it affecting anything after it? In other words my delay is 25% wet/dry throughout the loop, and I want one note to delay longer with a higher percentage (and fade out) while the notes after it stay at 25%.

Set up a delay and reverb on a return track and then automate the send so that it only effects one hit.

This seems to have the same problem. The effect on the returnA channel is only audible when the sendA knob is up, so it won't let the delay ring out over the other notes.

Here is a picture of what I'm trying to do. I want the highest note to have a more saturated delay than the notes after it. I angle the envelope downward to fade out but this will cause those notes immediately after the high note to change in delay as well. Am I doing something wrong?

I think I understand what you are trying to do. A very easy way to work around this is to duplicate your track. Then delete the highest note from the original and keep only the highest note on the new duplicate.

Now you have completely independent control over the single notes effects without any automation what so ever (stick with your effects as inserts).

When you have the settings you are happy with, freeze the duplicated track to save CPU.

This is how I've done it before, but thought there might be another way. Though I never considered freezing the track, Thanks for your help!

You can create a rack, but it would require 3 instances of your instrument. (Unless that individual note was the highest note in the entire melody, then you would only need two instances :) ). If it is a short sample of sorts, you might be able to use a very minimally set Simpler instead of the original sound source.

Just hit Ctrl+G on your instrument, duplicate it within the Rack, and edit the key ranges. Have the channel that plays that note set with an alternate delay.

Another similar option might be using an Audio Effects Rack, with the automation instead switching the Chain at the point when that notes hits. But this might not be as fun, as you can't improvise as easily :P
