mapping parameters to midi channels

Post by hcaz » Tue Feb 08, 2011 9:00 pm

I came to Live basically because of Max for Live and one of the advantages I saw was in using MIDI clips to store algorithmically produced automation. I'm been trying to get a handle on the best way to do this and just saw some tutorials about using the IAC driver. The thing is that I want to us 0-127 as a range of values (for instance, sampled from an LFO device) to control an "analog" parameter like, say, cutoff rather than something like triggering a clip based on a certain note. I think I have that side of it figured out, but am having trouble mapping parameters to MIDI channels. It's obviously very easy to map them to a note, but I can't figure out how to get it to map the values from a whole channel. The particular parameter I'm trying to do this with is downsample in the Redux device.

On an unrelated note, I was told there's an option in preferences to have multiple sets open at once, but don't see it. Is this only available in Studio? It would be very useful as I often use sets to experiment with new techniques and then want to transfer parts of them to more structured sets for mixing a track.

Thanks,
Zach

That's the tutorial I was referring to. I actually was able to get it working. Kind of stupid, but I didn't realize you have to map it while the automation is playing. I understand how this makes it intuitive for live players, but wish Ableton would compliment it with a more synchronic mapping mode for composing.
