The Ultimate Liveset Template, 8 Tracks, APC40 & Launchpad!!

Post by gncgry » Sun Feb 27, 2011 1:48 pm

i know the title is a bit lame, anyway..

this is my liveset template for DJ'ing and loop juggling. it has 8 tracks, bunch of effects and loopers. i also added Aurex's masher and sampledeck presets into this setup.

sorry for the clumsy video. i suck at screencasts:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZlQvrldtkPc

download:

http://hotfile.com/dl/107764428/965afdf ... t.zip.html - http://www.mediafire.com/?ykx3gf1kybiz7ub

thanks fly out to Aurex, Tom Cosm, willrjmarshall, monosylabik, tarekith and those that share the wonderful templates and racks.

how to:
you'll first need to download and setup the midikatapult (http://midikatapult.com) and change the layout.txt provided in the download above. next, remove your launchpad as a control surface but enable the midi track out in your Live preferences.

i'm also using nativekontrol's APC-CL3 preset. this is not required but if you don't have this, your volume faders may act weird.

get everything connected, fire up the template and drop in some loops and tracks.

Changes on the APC40:
* cue level changes the BPM
* crossfader is an instant effect, from right to left, quarter way up is a delay, half way up is a beat repeat, full way up is also a beat repeat but more harsh this time.
* pans work as feedback loop effects, will come to that in a minute..
* master fader is now the volume fader for the recorders, also will come to that.
* Record arm buttons work as effect routers.

On the Launchpad:
On the first page, top 2 rows are feedback loops. first row is a reverb and second row is a delay. press and hold which channels you want to send to effects, when you have enough volume on the effect, press the scene launch button to enable the feedback. the button will blink indicating that the feedback is enabled. press it again to turn it off. pans 1 to 4 control the reverb fx and 5 to 8 control the delay.

be easy on this, don't blow your speakers...

below are some effects. to use the effects, route the channels you want by pressing the record arm buttons on the APC40.

green button on the left most is a dry/wet switch, next 3 green are beat repeats. 3 greens on the right are delay, reverb and envelope filter, the last green button is -sort of- a reverb blast. red/yellow buttons work as faders controlling the parameters for these effects. play around them and you'll find out.

3 red scene launch buttons control the loopers. first one will record a 4 bars loop, third will record a 1 bar loop. as you record, the metronome will go red indicating the progress of the record and the middle button will blink in red also. after the recording is done, the middle button will blink green, indicating that the loop is playing. press this green blinking button to clear the loops.

again, use record arm buttons on the APC40 to select which tracks you want to be recorded.

Second page is the Aurex's SampleDeck (http://www.aurexmusic.com/launchpad) with a little add-on. three red buttons on the top buffers a 2 bars, 1 bar and a 1/2 bars of audio. when you press them, the red scene launch button will flicker to indicate there's buffered audio on the SampleDeck. press it again to disable it. amber buttons work as the sequencer as usual. just like above you'll use record arm buttons on the APC40 to select which tracks you want to use on the SampleDeck.

Third page is Aurex's Masher, again with a small change. top 4 green buttons change the metronome in 1/2, triplet, 1 bar and 2 bars which also changes the resolution of the sequence. press the red scene launch button to enable/disable the effect. i guess i dont have to say that you'll use record arm buttons on the APC40 again.

so the signal path is tracks > feedback loops > recorder (4bars) > FX > recorder (1 bar) > SampleDeck > Masher > out

that's pretty much it. enjoy.

hey. your template looks really interesting.
i have one question:
how di you achieve this:
" * Record arm buttons work as effect routers."
is it possible to do this without midikatapult?

yes. notice that every track goes into a "PRE" bus, and there's a retun track going into the effects. you map the record arm buttons so they max the send and min the volume of those "PRE" bus tracks. this simply routes the channel audio through the effects.

After much trial & error between osx & windows, drivers, and other nonsense, I've finally got it working. Now if only could go into some more detail about the use/point of the crossfader, that'd be awesome!

hi,

make sure the crossfader is at the right, play some clips then move it slowly to the left. you'll notice 3 different effects as you move it. you can use the crossfader for an instant effect that will apply to the whole channels.

either that, or you use the demo which deactivates itself after 30 minutes I think.
